* Due to there only being a handful of places to read reviews I thought I would leave this here to help people who are buying this game for the romance *

*Slight Spoilers* - *TLDR At the bottom*

After playing both the Book One in full (All Romances) And reading the current Demo for book 2, I was incredibly disappointed in the way the author handles the Male Romances, specifically the handling of the poly routes. As the author has stated both Milo and Gabe have Solo and Poly routes, but this isn't entirely true, and from reading some of the replies on the Tumblr, it's borderline sneaky.

Milo is non-monogamous with a locked in poly (Book 2), The MC can either be apart of that Poly or Choose to only date Milo while he remains in it. This wouldn't be an issue for me *At all* if it didn't become clear how little Milo actually care's for the MC. In his route, you are basically a walking doormat for him, you will always be a background character compared to the other RO in the poly and it's glaringly obvious. The other RO is special to them, a point that is reinforced constantly by the author, story and other characters... while our MC is kind of... there. I don't know if the author wanted to do this for Angst? Because they didn't notice? but it just come's across to me and a number of other reviews I read as basically "If you want to romance this character, you have to accept a non-monogamous relationship in which you're side-lined... because Character Trauma *TM"

This is all made even clearer in the Second book, to the point that the author plays on it. There's multiple scenes where the author pushes the narrative of Malcolm and Milo *immediately* getting close again, so much so he's accused of jumping into bed before your body is even cold. and how Malcolm even states he just sees him and Milo as *being on a break*, Through the Book 2 Demo, Malcolm and Milo consistently find one another, they consistently choose one another and Malcolm consistently defends Milo when the MC "goes too far".  Though the author *has* tried to give M&M issues between one another, and put our MC more at the centre of the relationship rather than as a bystander, (Even adding in that Mylo may feel jealous of Malcom).  As others have said, Milo's route feels like, and heavily pushes the idea that Malcom and Milo are soulmates, meant to be together and will always find each-other. We just happened to turn up while they were "on a  break"... that's it, that's unfortunately how it feels and it's something that even the game itself pushes with many characters framing it that way.

Gabe has similar issues but is far less "In your face" While Gabe *does* have a solo route, it becomes clear that that is *not* his preference... It's obvious that while you can Romance Gabe solo, he is constantly open to including his Ex... which is an awful way of handling a Poly route. It comes across as though they're just "waiting" for the MC to change their mind and that's... awful. We learn that Gabe was (and considering they get back together in the poly), still is, very much in love with Belladonna, he simply hasn't come to terms with that. The coldness and arguing between the two is a good way for the author to show that they have issues, that their relationship is not something that can easily be repaired... however... considering *you* the MC can have a similar relationship (If you choose the whole 'He was prepared to let you be butchered in a flesh pit' route) then it no longer seems as though they are quite against one-another as it first seems. The existence of a poly route for Gabe, at least in the way it's done now, almost entirely invalidates the solo route, because the reader knows that Gabriel, with the right wording, would include Bella in the romance.

All in all, I believe that the Author really should let people know about these issues with the romances before people invest time and money, I understand if perhaps, these issues were made to be angsty or even as a specific trope, but it doesn't come across that way. Hopefully these issues are touched upon in the Book 2 Demo, All of that said and as harsh as I may have sounded, this book is honestly incredible, I may have my issues with the romance but they are still good compelling characters with an incredible story, the amount of variance you can have, the way the story changes based on your decisions, it's incredible. The Night Market itself gives me the same kind of feeling as "Alice in Wonderland" in that it's this beautiful, eerie place and I think the author should be proud of not only creating such a place, but also making it feel alive.

TLDR  - While the story and characters are incredible, the handling of the monogamous male routes (to me)  feel like a serious gut punch due to the way they feel more like an afterthought of the Poly-Routes. You're either made to feel like a "third" in a relationship between two soulmates or a "second choice" after the first choice rejects them.

Very helpful review, thank you for sharing!

Thank you for this. I came very close to purchasing this game, until I found out all of the male ROs were trash and more interested in other characters than they are the MC. When I learned about the Milo "romance" (and I use this term loosely), it pretty much sealed it for me, but I kept asking questions about the game from those who played in order to learn more. Gabriel is flat out abusive. Milo is a bait and switch, with the MC as an unneeded (and basically unwanted) third wheel in a relationship between two soulmates.

I urge you to post this review on Steam, so male-romancing players don't get bamboozled into actually thinking the MC serves any purpose in this story other than being the LIs' doormat. From what I've heard, MCs who romance females get fed well, without the emotional abuse they would get in the male "romances".

Hi as someone who read/purchased the book, I don't understand where the "Gabriel is flat out abusive" from??? Because I've never encountered/experienced that while reading his route. All I do experience from it is that he is very troubling with the ideals and morals he had in his character but never something forced upon the reader physically or mentally.

Good to know. I don't dislike poly relationships in my IF but going off of what I heard here among other places, it's poorly executed for both characters. It's also not right that the author claims Milo has a solo route when it's just a different type of polyamorous relationship. I think I'll have to pass.

Thank you for posting this review! It really helped with my decision in not purchasing the full game.

I completely agree with this sentiment, especially regarding Gabe’s route. As someone who has only played Gabe’s solo route, I found the experience deeply disappointing and, frankly, emotionally draining. Going into the story, I expected a romance centered on my MC and Gabe, one that would allow the relationship to develop organically and meaningfully. However, what I encountered felt more like an unspoken waiting game, where I was merely filling the void left by Belladonna rather than being a genuine romantic partner.

The fact that Gabe’s supposed "solo route" feels so heavily influenced by his unresolved feelings for his ex is extremely off-putting. Instead of feeling like a true choice, the route comes across as though the MC is just a placeholder until Gabe and Belladonna eventually reconcile. Even in moments where the tension between them is palpable, there’s an undeniable sense that their connection is too strong to compete with, leaving the MC to feel like an afterthought.

This approach to romance—especially in a game marketed for its romance options—is particularly hurtful for players like me who don’t enjoy or want non-monogamous relationships. It creates a sense of betrayal, as if the choice to pursue Gabe was invalid from the start because the narrative doesn’t fully respect or explore the solo relationship. Instead of fostering a fulfilling connection, it constantly feels like the game is nudging you toward accepting the poly route, even if that’s not what you wanted or signed up for.

I understand that polyamorous relationships can be a central theme in some stories, but the way it’s handled here feels manipulative. If Gabe truly had a preference for polyamory, that should have been made clear from the start rather than giving players the illusion of choice. It’s especially painful to invest time and emotions into building a connection with Gabe, only to repeatedly feel like the MC is second-best or, worse, simply "filling a hole."

For a game that thrives on its immersive world and complex relationships, it’s a shame that the romance dynamics—particularly for players seeking monogamous routes—feel so sidelined and undermined. Hopefully, the author will address these issues moving forward and provide clearer communication about the romantic expectations for each character, so players can make informed decisions about the routes they want to explore.

Reading this actually helped me because you've put into words something I wanted to express when I first made this review but either felt like I was wrong or simply couldn't word it properly. After looking back over my review and thinking of Gabe's romance, I honestly think the way the author has done the poly route actively *invalidates* the monogamous route.

The reason for that, as you and other have put it;
-  Throughout the story Belladonna and Gabriel have multiple scenes of them arguing, fighting etc. The MC is often involved and their choices effect the reconciliation of each-other. The problem is that these scenes are also used as a way to build the Poly route. Unless you actively try to make them dislike each-other then any 'friendly' choice is also a 'Poly' choice, regardless of the route you're on.

- We learn that Gabriel was in-love with Belladonna and wanted to admit that too her, but she rejected him (In a  cruel way). And it's extremely obvious he hasn't forgiven her... the whole story around them two is their animosity because of that rejection and subsequent falling out. so again, regardless of the route he has unresolved romantic feelings (If he didn't he wouldn't be ready to enter a poly the moment they stop arguing)

- Because of the way that's handled, and the fact the poly route really only comes down to one scene, one decision, then it's obvious that *you* are the only reason they don't end up together. This pretty much *proves* that even in the monogamous route, Gabriel want's to be with, or at least involve Belladonna, which completely invalidates the monogamous route and really does prove that we're a "second" choice.

I’m so glad my words helped articulate what you were feeling!

Honestly, it’s kind of wild how the author handled the romance in this game. I get that they were probably trying to explore complex relationship dynamics, but the execution? Well, let's just say it didn’t quite hit the mark. If you’re going to give players the option of a monogamous route, at least actually make it feel like a valid choice, right? Instead, the game sets it up where you’re always secondary to the poly route, even if you’re supposedly on the monogamous path. It's like they said, “Hey, you can romance this character, but also, here's this other person who matters more, and you’re just kind of here for the ride.” That’s not romance; that’s just being the backup dancer to a show you’ll never headline.

Now, I get the whole “trauma and unresolved feelings” thing, but if you're going to have your character wrestle with their past, maybe give the MC a shot at feeling like they’re actually the one in the relationship, not a placeholder while the character works out their issues. In Gabriel’s case, it feels like you’re just... well, waiting for the moment where he turns back to Belladonna, because deep down, that’s where his heart is. And don’t even get me started on the “poly route choice.” It’s one decision that feels more like the game is saying, “Hey, either accept this mess or watch them go back to each other. Your choice!” Except it’s not really a choice when the game practically forces you into that situation, and it leaves you wondering if the author actually understood what the term monogamous means.

And the way it’s all handled with this big dramatic tension—like, yes, we get it, Gabriel and Belladonna have issues—but do we have to be involved in this melodrama, constantly pushed into a corner where we can never win? It’s one thing to explore complex relationships, but it’s another thing entirely to leave the player feeling like an afterthought, like they're just the person standing in the background while the real drama unfolds.

It’s such a shame because the world-building and atmosphere are so immersive, but this handling of the poly and monogamous routes feels like a betrayal. The romance should be empowering, but instead, it feels like the MC is caught in a relationship that they can never truly win. Hopefully, this feedback will get the attention it deserves, and maybe the author can address these issues in a way that makes all routes feel equally valid and fulfilling.

The author is actually *very* aware of this, and my post specifically because they complained about it on Tumblr, instead of trying to understand the feedback, which, as we can see many people here and in other reviews have... they double downed and it just became an echo chamber of fans telling them to ignore it and try to justify all of the things people here have brought up and so on,

This was made nearly five months ago though, looking at another review which the author *did* reply to, they seem to be e open to criticism now than they were so we'll see, the only change I've seen about this at all though is that they added a little description telling people Milo was Poly locked on steam so I don't know

(+3)

Oh, wow, that’s honestly disappointing to hear but not entirely surprising. It’s such a bad look for an author to respond to legitimate feedback by complaining on their platform instead of actually addressing the concerns in a meaningful way. Like, doubling down and dismissing valid points as just “haters being haters” or using their fanbase to create an echo chamber? That’s not how you grow as a writer or improve your work. It’s especially frustrating because the issues you and others have brought up aren’t nitpicks—they’re fundamental flaws in the way the romances are structured.

The fact that they only recently added the poly-lock disclaimer feels like a band-aid fix rather than taking responsibility for misleading players who don’t enjoy that kind of dynamic. It’s great that they might be slightly more open to criticism now, but if that’s the only noticeable change, it’s hard to feel like they’re genuinely listening to feedback rather than just doing the bare minimum to avoid backlash.

What’s worse is the damage has already been done for so many players who invested time and emotional energy into these romances, only to feel blindsided by how poorly the routes are handled. It’s not like people are saying “Poly bad” here; it’s about how the dynamics are written in a way that actively makes players feel invalidated and secondary, even in the supposedly monogamous routes.

If they’re truly open to criticism now, hopefully, they’ll take a hard look at how these issues affect the player experience instead of brushing it off or just pandering to their most vocal supporters. But yeah, considering how long it took just to put a disclaimer on Steam, I wouldn’t hold my breath for anything substantial. At the end of the day, authors who prioritize echo chambers over constructive feedback are only limiting their own growth—and, honestly, their audience too.

thank you all for this thread !! was planning on playing this as its been in my backlog for a bit, but after reading this thread and a few others, i think i probably wont enjoy this one. its not just because i'm here for romance, but if i'm playing something that has romance and the romance isn't well executed, it really sticks out and distracts me from the overall story.
