Can't connect to pumpkin server?

Hey there!

Super excited to play, but it seems I can't connect to the server? It's an empty world? Tried the two other universes to no avail.

Internet is working fine, all other games connect fine, just this one!

I am on linux, not sure if that impacts anything.

Developer

Hey, just want to make sure, you've downloaded the latest build right?

Hmm, can't seem to find a way to check the version. I downloaded it today though, so likely the latest build, just using the itch.io linux option. Extracted the files to a folder. Doubleclicking the Pumpkins_ClientSupporter.x86_64 just worked right away which surprised me, no need to install, so maybe I missed a step. Game works 100% otherwise, just no network connected.

On Opensuse Tumbleweed.

Oh and its the with hats version! Just tried without hats but still same issue.

Developer

Hmm, not sure about this, perhaps it's a firewall issue?

On the title screen do you see the "2500 pumpkins submitted this year" in the bottom left corner?

I can double check the latest Linux version to make sure it works for me (tbh I don't check it with every patch) but perhaps the Unity log has something helpful in there. I need to remember where it is on Linux tho, I'll get back to you.

Also, have you ever played the game in a previous year and had it work?

Developer

Sorry for the trouble, btw!!

Just checked and it says "zero pumpkins served this year" so it isn't able to connect right from the get go!

I don't have any custom firewall set up, just whatever linux has by default.

I have not played in previous years, just purchased it this year.

Let me know if there is a way to get a log or something to you to help.

And no worried about any trouble! This is pretty normal for us linux users! We submit the most bugs!

Developer

The logs should be here i think?

~/.config/unity3d/adamgryu/pumpkins/Player.log

I was pretty busy today but I'll try and look more into this soon.

Feel free to email me the logs to: hello @ adamgryu.com

That does not seem to exist on my system sadly!

Developer

So I tested the Linux build on the Steam Deck this morning, and it seems to work fine there.

I realized an easy way to find the logs is to go to the festival, click C for camera, N for screenshots, then click Open Folder. Then go up one folder to find the save data folder which should have the logs. Not sure if they'll be handy but it's worth checking.

Otherwise I don't really have a good hunch for what the problem is yet. I wonder if Opensuse comes with a restrictive firewall by any chance? If your other multiplayer games work fine than maybe not, but perhaps Opensuse has some more strict settings about unfamiliar executables downloaded from the Internet? If you feel comfortable with it, might be worth disabling the firewall temporarily just to make sure that's not the problem?

Sorry I'm not sure why this is happening yet! 馃様

Thanks for the advice on getting the log! I found it and sent it to you. Not sure why I couldn't find it before.

I turned off the firewall and tried - it still did not connect to server, so it is not firewall related as far as I can tell!

This is an interesting mystery!

I searched the curl error found in the log, seems to be a connection issue and something about ssl. Noticed some folks mention DNS impacted it, so switched my DNS from Cloudflare to automatic, but that didn't help!

(also, just realized you made a short hike, that game is amazing!!!)

Developer

Thanks so much, about a short hike haha

I didn't get your email somehow, perhaps you could send it to me at my other email: dev.adamgryu [at] gmail.com

Or you could find me on the pumpkin game discord and DM me there!

Sent on both!

Having the same issue, also running Opensuse Tumbleweed
