I found it more surprising that the execution had very little relationship to the killer's talent other than the items on the conveyor belt but I accepted it as a new take, the humourless brutality certainly helps distinguish it from Danganronpa.
It could also do with the fact Eva herself doesn't align with her talent. The disconnect in her execution fit what she said about her talent slowing her down rather being a part of her.
