I've been using my xbox controller, and it works just fine, but the sticks automatically go back to center, unlike most RC controllers.

I'm not sure if I want to go full bore into the hobby yet, so I was wondering if there was a super cheap controller that has the throttle that does not spring back to center.

I'd suggest you to go for the E-Sky 0905A USB transmitter simulator. I use it with all my simulators and it works flawlessly. I think it's the cheapest you can find as well.

Turnigy Evolution controller works fine as well. Tested in Win7/10 and Ubuntu/Mint 14.x/18.x
