At the very beginning of the game, I made a save before even choosing a pokemon, and every time I chose one after reloading (was doing a bit of save scumming to get the nature I wanted for Squirtle) I got the Running Shoes. Not exactly game changing, since you get them after the very first gym, but it takes a fair bit of the annoyance out of the early game after you start a new save.
