In a period of time, I considered hard about how to use AI in my workflow and stuffs because the medias in my country are pushing AI agenda real hard to the point that nobody is against the coming of AI. Basically we're just good consumers that don't know the underlying danger that comes with the AI trend.
So I spent like 3 months both using and researching about gen AI to the point that I'm literate enough. Though I never try developing or deploying LLM myself, it's still good enough to be a certified consumer.
Since I'm a game developer, you should know that I'm already familiar with the AI concepts.
It's baffling that so many people dismissed the fundamental AI concepts as "they're not AI". Like they don't even know what AI is outside of the gen AI.
I understand that normies won't be able to understand things as deep as people whom directly working in this field. Compared to most "tech bros" I might even be more qualified to talk about the direction of the world under this trend and what could happen and the direction our world is going regarding technologies.
So I'll walk you through what I'm thinking, though I can't guarantee that you would understand all of them since I'm not trying to make the perfect book and just a random post on top of my head.
================
First, the cognitive bias.
Both users and the chatbots will have some kind of cognitive bias. You'll likely see a bunch of mainstream propaganda showering at you whenever you try to push the boundaries.
My prompts got nuked several times when I pushed too hard. Even with my soft approaches, I'd got preached about the propaganda.
And we need to remember that the information these chatbots trained on were something which already narrated by the mainstream years ago. The likelihood that the information are true would be only on specific areas like math which we can't deny or solid truth like birth-illness-death.
No, they won't become your terminator.
If there are terminators, then the elites decided to purge plebs like us.
===================
Second, inbreeding data.
When the gen AI trained on their own data and keep "evolving", it's become a mess.
This is why I always tell people that having finite perdetermined protocols will always be better than superficial infinity.
In short, you'd rather find proven solutions and take note of them for quick access than formulating new solutions using existing knowledges.
While it's not leading to something new, you won't reinvent the wheel if you need it for the same old purposes.
btw, this is also a good lesson for gamedev. If something is perfectly fine, just use them. Always ask your own intentions, so you won't lose your way. Many people let their ego consume their minds and ended up suffering. Like you have blueprint on unreal and you just want to make a small game, but use c++ anyway. Some people want to make a simple game, you have godot a powerful open source game engine, but code your own custom engine from scratch. You might find a good excuse of you learnt a lot, but if your intention was to make a simple game just use godot.
===============
Third, the impact on the society.
Many people claimed that in order to sustain AI, we spent so much resources.
Even if it's not true, the idea of "recompiling" for every adjustment you need for the results would already consumed so much time.
IF you're working with highly skilled people, you'd have so much higher quality works finished within the same time while you might got quantity but that's the mistakes hell you have to go through as if your entire company only consisting of interns.
Not to mention the fact that so many people lost their jobs. There were obvious attempts to muffle and downplay this matter, but they can't hide such a huge elephant with just a single leaf.
We don't even have the UBI in place and they already laid-off so many people. Are you still wishing for the UBI? IF they wanted to do in the first place, they'd put UBI before they start laying people off.
But I understand their decision. There are so many jobs which are just inefficient. That's why some jobs have people that pretending to be busy working when they're actually have no work. The fake busy culture is just stupidly inefficient for the societal productivity. If I'm the company owner, I'd also fire many people to restructure the company to be more efficient.
=================
People already fed up.
This might not reach the mass yet, but the number is spreading fast. People got enough of stupid AI shits swarming everywhere.
Images are soulless. Videos are just far from functional. Not to mention fake images or even speech are everywhere.
Some people never talk about something but their faces and voices already made for them.
This is still not touching the deepfake stuffs and pornography. Don't ask me how I know, everyone knew how.
They're tools weaponize against humanity.
They're here to destroy our culture and fabricating what we like and what we don't.
I knew that those people are already writing narrative for so long already. All they care is the "welcome to my new humble boat" moment.
==================
Let's be real here, all those mentioned above are stuffs you guys already knew.
Here are my real reasons beyond the idea of being ethical.
I'm not trying to appeal to people just because I refused to use gen AI in my projects.
First, they're boring.
look at those AI images, they're basically just a few same styles.
I know that my skills are not as good, but they're not boring.
Imagine if 50% of noob gamedevs are using gen AI to make their first games, how would the steam become after flooded by those trashy boring stuffs. As if we don't have enough shovelwares.
=====================
Second, I want to make stuffs myself
I could just use marketplace assets and make a bunch of shovelwares to flood steam already with my abundance knowledges about unreal. But I'm not doing it.
It's not like I don't want to, trust me I want to just grind for money as much as I could too.
But I have my ambitious goals. The thing is those goals required me to have certain level of skils in various areas.
So I can't just make shovelwares and put my efforts on marketing just to make more money.
If I really want money, there are so many opportunities for me to jump into and become a billionair. I just can't lose something which required to lose in order to become the billionair. Those things are more important for me than money and fame.
=======================
Third, I'm a prideful person.
If I'm not proud of something, I won't be able to walk with my head up.
I'd be so depressed if I do something that hurt my moral values.
For example, making a pornography.
========================
Finally, I'm just having fun working.
What is the point of being alive if you don't have fun?
Money will come anyway, why not just have fun in the process?
That's right, I'm developing videogames because I'm having fun.
Why would you think I could stick for 10 years without any form of success?
I don't even have a fan. I only have fellow gamedev friends here.
My projects are also not guarantee success.
But I'm improving everyday even while working on the side project or even while I'm playing other videogames.
============================
Let's say if somehow everything gone to shit, we have to live without electricity and internet for years.
I'd just make tabletop games.
Ofcourse I'll find another way to make a living than hope for my games success.
But my happiness would be the same. To continued creating games for humanity.
Thank you for reading this far. I hope you learn something from this post.
