Must it be the gameplay that lasts 20 seconds, or can I be more flexible with it and add something such as something only happening every 20 seconds, or needing to do a series of tasks, with 20 seconds to do each one?
A 20 second game is the target of the jam and we’re really pushing the message that is the expectation.
That said we’re only disqualifying games that fail to engage with the concept of 20 seconds in any identifiable way whatsoever (really low bar but surprisingly many have failed to clear it).
So you’re clear to explore your idea if that’s what you want to do, free from concern about the game getting pulled. I’d just encourage exploring ways to make your concept align more closely. We can offer suggestions on how to do that if you like, here or on the Discord.
