hey! Nice art (especially the background) and concept, good job for your first programming experience.
The game is quite fun and I am so glad I could finish it ;)
But I had a bug when I was using arrow keys to move, then I switched to WASD and it was ok.
It's a shame about your friend - but while I can definitely tell you had to scale the project back a lot, the player does feel very fun to control! I'd play more if there was theoretically more.
And, of course, the art is great - especially the player.
