How essential is the theme?

I have just started experimenting with Bitsy a few days ago, and have an idea for my game before I found this jam.

How essential is it for me to incorporate the theme?

I guess I can always add a quick museum room to my game if required.

(Well, maybe the old key that the player needs to progress the story is actually in a museum!)

Hello, the theme is sort of a guideline to inspire you, you are free to explore it the way you like.  There's no  rating for this jam and no winner.

I would however say, if you think you have a good idea for a Bitsy game, it would be better for you to make it outside of the jam, because you might feel constrained by the theme, or the deadline. You can do another game if the theme inspire you, but whatever you decide I would be happy to see your submission :)

Thanks for the reply. I only want to make a short game as I keep starting new projects before finishing my old ones. Haha

I wanted to have the avatar to explore a few places and trade items with NPCs before unlocking a gate. A museum is perfect as I can put anything in there!
