Tonight’s Music is the seminal Smashing Pumpkins sophomore success Siamese Dream. The album was released two years after their debut Gish, spawning several hit singles and catapulting the Pumpkins into the Grunge Rock Mainstream. If that extended metaphor alone does not tickle your Third Eye, this might: most often, a band’s second album is considered its worst, much as the first sequel to a film or novel often sucks (ostensibly). Siamese Dream reminds us that, in many cases, sophomore sickness notwithstanding, the most popular dreams come secondarily, only after a Lull.*
