4 hours in we're settled with the pitch for our game :

The playable character is a cyborg whose family has been taken away from him. His only chance to save them is to partake on a deadly racing game where he has to compete against other cyborg and reach the finish line through the checkpoint without being killed by his opponents

Gameplay wise, we want a fast paced experience with the possibility for the player to slide or skid on the ground (with some platforming action if with manage to make it)

So far 3 of us have been working on the main character design

The final design is not finished yet because we want to be sure about the characters proportions, but the final design will most likely be derived from this one

In the meantime Valentin made some props for our first blockout of the racing track, as well as some robots body parts. We aim for a cartoonish/low poly render in the end for it to be easier to rig and animate but it gave us an idea of the overall process

Emilie started working on music and sound production, we can't send a preview yet but the first sample sounds very promising !

The programming part is handled by Mathis and he is progressing quickly towards our objective of having the basic gameplay mechanics ready for tonight

8th hour : we wrapped up the concept phase and are now working on the main props of the game

Following this concept, Pierre-Marie and Valentin are currently working on the model for the game character

We should be done with it before tomorrow.

I'm personally working on some assets that you'll be able to find on the track like the starting points, stone debris and checkpoints, as well as textures and shaders in unity

Mathis was having trouble with some interactions he had to program but everything should go smoothly by now

Emilie is still working on the music while giving advices and preparing the rigging / animation phase

here's a snippet of our game's main theme, a synthwave inspired song mixed with a moody melody to highlight the sad part of the plot

3rd update :

We are mostly done with both parts of the model, now the kids are busy merging them
Once we have the model Emilie will then make the rig and animation for it (since its a lot of work the rest of us are probably going to work on other task related to it)

I made a quick texture for the start/end ; unfortunately i ended up dumping my works on shader graph  since we decided not to use the high definition render pipeline

Next is a low poly ship that'll be used as a background prop

In the next hours we hope to work on texturing the main character and do some UI design

Mathis is polishing the movements of the character, we aim to have a very smooth gameplay experience before we start to work on level design

Music wise, Emilie has an updated version of the soundtrack to share :

I am working on the UI and some ideas for the environment.  I am also rigging and skinning our 3d character

Hi ! some are back from sleeping

during this morning Emilie and Pierre-Marie managed to modeling props and skin our character

Host

Thanks for your update ^^

Update : We have some problems with the main character... I don't think it will be ready at the end of the jam so we'll have a crisis meeting to decide what to do.

The gameplay loop is ready but unity's Navmesh agent  is going often wild. So the ennemies aren't ready to be integrated.

Host

Be brave for the longest night! thanks for your update!

Last update : We're done !

Game link : https://itch.io/jam/emotional-game-jam-2020/rate/572243

It was a lot of fun, and although we had some technical issues we all felt like we were learning things while doing it

The game does not include some intended features like PvE multiplayer,  collectibles and platform phases but the prototype feels good enough to us :)

One thing we would have liked to integrate more is the storytelling but the technical aspects took most of the spotlight of our work process.

Anyways, we hope you'll like it ! The last one standing is going to sleep now too

Host

Thank you Arthur. Get some sleep !
