Wow so many secrets! So far got all the purple paper cranes and 4 butterflies (including the one under lakebed), also found a stuck lantern on the cliff...

I just wonder how to open the portal gate to bring "him" into this world? (・ิω・ิ)

Love the visual and songs! What an awesome mixtape!

Nice work! Thanks for playing <3 Wonder if you can get them all!!!

Man I wish I could play it! Do you have any plans on supporting keyboard in the future? The menu works with WASD and E but I can't press square when the game actually starts.

Developer

It wouldn't be a huge undertaking with the way I overhauled the controls for 1.1 so  I might consider throwing in keyboard support in the next week or so if I get a chance. I made the choice to keep it out to fit the general aesethic but provided that the player knows it is _best_ played via controller I don't suppose it hurts to add keyboard controls :3

That'd be cool!! I tried it with an Xbox controller, but I'm assuming it's only for PlayStation controllers? It also seemed weird to have some keyboard functionality in the menu but not for the game, like I thought maybe I didn't have something configured properly.

Developer (1 edit)

Xbox controllers are fine, the button prompts just won't match up (an aesthetic choice, I actually devved it with an Xbox gamepad) . The keyboard functionality was a test while implementing the new control system and I just didn't rip it out. Originally the game would stop you from accessing the menu if you had no controller but I figured it was a better option to let people get to the main game just in case they did have something that worked with it but for whatever reason the game didn't pick up on it ^^

Tried a couple different ways to get the Xbox controller to work, must be a me problem... Love the PS1 aesthetic though, very cool and nostalgic looking.

Developer

Oh that's a shame! Thanks for trying again. I'll let you know when it has Keyboard controls if you you still wanna play it by that point ^^

Well, this is easily my favorite entry of the jam, and a game I truly hope more people get a chance to play and rate before the voting is over. I've given it 5 stars all around. :)

Setting aside the excellent visual design/aesthetic and the great use of audio and sound cues to instill a beautifully lonesome atmosphere, this feels so incredibly personal and yet inspiring to experience. The puzzle-ish nature of finding the collectibles and figuring out what to do with them is the perfect framework for unravelling the story here, and the more you discover in the woods, the less you feel lost and disoriented. You're making connections through music and writing, and those connections help guide you and give you a sense of where you are and where you should go. It's such a good idea, and so well made!

Personally, finding the boomboxes and discovering what else was on the mixtape became my favorite part of exploring. I got so happy when (SPOILER!)Sleater-Kinney and Portishead started playing! And it was truly rewarding to dance along with the music and watch the lanterns float. Just so freaking good :) I'll be recommending this to friends for sure.

Naw thank you so much <3 Your post has made my week  ^^ I'm okay if not many play it, hopefully those that do have a unique and interesting experience with it :) I'm glad it worked so well for you and appreciate you posting about it ^^

This is amazingly well executed - but how do I get out of the first room?!?

Developer (1 edit)

Jump(Triangle/Y) onto the rocks to reach the ledge (you can also just mash against the ledge face like a pro) and grab the first origami note sitting on the ledge <3 Thanks for the kind words ^^

Ah of course - got it now. Was playing on xbox controller and mixing up pressing X instead of A

How does one download this game?

Developer(+1)

Downloads are now available on the main page, either online or via the itch client! Let me know if you have any issues.

Thank you! Downloaded and fired it up, but it wasn't compatible with my gamepad. I grabbed my PS4 controller and hooked that up, but for some reason it turned off all of the game's sound? Haha... Oh, and the camera was constantly rotating, and it seemed like my buttons weren't properly aligned with the prompts you have on screen.

Sorry to drop all that on you, it looks like you've put a ton of great work into this game. I love the whole look and style of it, so I hope the controller issues can get sorted out. :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Ironically I built the game up around an XBOX controller despite the PSX aesthetic, so the camera is probably rotating because it's bringing in the wrong input axis aha.  I'll get a fix up over the next few days just need to wrestle away the PS4 from the housemates so I can do some debugging and testing.  I'll let you know when it's up.  For curiosities sake what was the first controller you tried to use? Also thanks for saying it looks cool I hope you get to play it!

Glad you're gonna find time to update it! Looking forward to that. I'm very much interested in making a project with the same aesthetic of this (been watching loads of videos about classic JRPGs lately), so I was thrilled to see someone nailing it. Gives me hope I can pull it off in the future. :)

My first controller I tired to use was a Logitech Gamepad F310, which is pretty ancient at this point. It usually works fine, but thankfully I've got the PS4 I can steal from in the other room.

Developer(+1)

Haha thanks. I put quite a few hours into the PS1 trying to get little things kinda of right ^^ Definitely keen to make another game in the same style^^The F310 is covered in the patch I'm working on at the moment , as well as the PS4 controller. You'll have your pick :)  Also I discovered that the DS4 audio issue is related to the controller itself. It changes your default audio device as soon as it's plugged in, which is just an absurd thing for it to do, but all you have to do is change it back over using your sound manager.

Submitted

Ah, that's great to know! Appreciate the update, and looking forward to that new build :)

Developer (1 edit)

It's been updated now :) My housemate had the same controller so I got to test it =o hopefully it works

Perfect! I'll start a new thread after I get a chance to play today :)
