This was a very original experience.
How does it works exactly? Raycasting? Lighting ? Shader parameter?
I'm currently stuck at the level you have on your last screenshot. But I will try to finish it for sure.
Good job! :)
Edit: I'm almost forgot, I think the controls can be improved by using pseudo isometric directions when the main character is moved. :)
I'm glad you liked it and thanks for sticking with it for so many levels :)
The lighting mostly works with a toon shader and a light source you spin around with your mouse. We used MK toon free from the unity asset store in case you'd like to try it yourself.
Can you describe pseudo isometric controls in a little more detail please? Sounds quite interesting. (Funnily enough I personally think that the character controls work way better with a controller due to the freedom an analogue stick gives you, but we never managed to implement the light controls for the controller due to time constraints)
Thanks for the answer about the "making of", it was really instructive.
I don't know if "isometric controls" is the basic words for that, but what I mean is to move your player to the North East or North West when you push the up button for example. When I wanted to move in your game, I needed to push two button simultaneously to move to the right direction (or making some zigzag which was not very productive XD). It's like project your input axes into your game coordinate system (or camera axes if you prefer). I don't know if it will work, maybe it will be too weird for the player, but I would give it a try.
And you'll probably right. It could be better with analog controls. :)
Ah, I see now. Yeah that's exactly the problem that I was having too and that is solved by the analogue stick controls. I could definitely try rotating the movement direction reference object by 45° to see if that feels ok or weird.
Impressive idea and its realisation, I've played a lot of games with 'only one light source' concept. But this game make all the difference to it. The only problem is conrols of movement. Great job.
Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you like our little prototype :)
Controls could use some improvements, yeah
Maybe some ways could be clearer maybe that somehow, there would be a way to get the light orientation right. Depending on the moment of the level, maybe there would be different "right orientation". Maybe there would be hidden ways to skip difficulties that would require much attention and understanding of the perspective.
Here were my random thoughts.
Else, it was worth trying! Good job! :)
Thank you for your thoughts and thanks for playing :)
Great concept ,but a little bit hard to control .
Well done !
Thank you. I agree that it can be quite tricky, especially in the web version since the mouse is not locked in the browser version.
thanks for playing and for your feedback (:
The concept was great, I just had some trouble getting the light to show me what I wanted to see. But, perhaps that was the point of the game! Figuring out what exactly you're looking at. All in all, great work.
Thank you for the feedback! Yeah that's partially the point but I too think that the light controls could feel a bit more intuitive and easier to use. Anyway, thanks again for checking it out and commenting :)
As you may have noticed, we also have different light controls in some of the levels, which doesn't necessarily make learning the controls any easier. In retrospect, a bit more consistency would probably have increased accessibility :) thanks for playing and for your feedback
This game was really cool. It's so stylish! Spinning the light somehow felt a bit weird and I wasn't able to get used to it but that's the only thing.
The game concept was super interesting and probably has a lot of potential.
Thank you for your feedback. I agree that spinning the light could feel more natural, especially in levels where it can be spun freely (vs on a fixed axis).
The potential is really there though, yeah. I'd like to keep playing around with this idea.
yes the controls definitely need more polish and a lot of player feedback - thanks for yours :)
The light mechanic has a lot of potential! I really liked how you introduced the controls at the very start of the game. I think the way of changing the direction of the light needs to be a bit easier/responsive - I found that it was at times difficult to get the light pointing in the direction I wanted it to. This game tackled the platformer genre in a different, interesting way - the focus is more on having a good understanding of the obstacles in front of you!
Thank you a lot for your detailed feedback! I'm glad you liked the introduction cause I think that's my favourite part of it ^^
I also agree that controlling the light can sometimes be more fiddly and confusing than we intended, especially in the levels where the light can rotate freely on all axes. Some more time to experiment with this mechanic would be great.
Thanks again an have a great day :D
Thanks for taking the time to write such extensive feedback. Comments like yours make me want to develop the game further right away :) The light controls, the movement and also the level design need a lot of playtesting and time to experiment. Thats why I also think that it would be worthwhile and quit fun to continue development - thanks a lot for playing and commenting!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it :)
and I really love the idea of handing out the game in little jars! thanks for that image ^^
Took me some time to figure out the light mechanic. Tricky game that relies more on what you see than on your jumping ability. Really cool!
Well thank you for giving it a shot! I'm glad you liked it :)
pretty nice tagline you phrased there. Do you mind if I include it in the game description? (;
Feel free to use it in any way you want!
neat idea! nice game
Thank you for playing! Appreciate it :)
thanks for playing (:
