I think this is a really interesting take on the theme (now that I've played the fixed version), but I very quickly settled in to a single strategy - stand as far away from my target as I could and hope the shoot command would come up in time, and run away to try again if it didn't.

As other commenters have said, it'd be good if your actions were more predictable. Maybe you could have the commands appearing in a fixed order and cycling through a fair bit faster. Fix the cycling to the beat of some music, and you could have a pretty novel rhythm game.

It's very impressive what you managed to put together in the time of the game jam, and I think it could be a great jumping off point for a larger project.

Thanks for all the feedback!  I noticed that the bit you mentioned about falling into a single strategy seemed to be a common issue, so that is definitely something I intend to address.  I would have liked to create a fixed order for each individual level to make the patterns more purposeful, but there just wasn't enough time.  I really like the idea of putting the cycle to the beat of music, so I might have to try that after the jam is over.  Again, thanks for playing!  It really means a lot!

Hard game, but i liked it!

Great work!

Yeah, the difficulty definitely needs to be adjusted, but I'm glad you had fun!  Thanks for playing!

Glad you liked it, and thanks for leaving a comment!

Glad I read the comments about it being the last level! Fun idea! The only gripe I had was the death sound. With headphones on, it'll bust your eardrums! Other than that, cool game! Kudos!

Developer

Ha, I didn't realize that the death sound was so loud until I just played through again with headphones.  Will definitely make it quieter if I ever update the game :)  Thanks for playing!

Top marks for originality.  Shame that it loaded up the last level, would have liked to play it with an easier learning curve.  Just about managed to kill a zombie.

Developer

Thanks for playing!  If you would like to play the proper version, I have uploaded it here: https://greencheese333.itch.io/sole-survivor-proper.  It’s obviously too late to fix the jam submission, but I would still appreciate feedback!

Developer (1 edit)

So, I just realized that the game is actually out of order at the moment.  The level that you jump to after pressing play is actually the last level of the game, which explains the difficulty problems people have been having.  I will upload the proper version of the game after the jam is over!  Oops!

In the meantime, you can try out the proper game here: https://greencheese333.itch.io/sole-survivor-proper.  I would really appreciate if I could still get some feedback!

Being able to do only one thing at a time is a creative mechanic, but WOW this game is hard! From what I understand, the actions are chosen randomly, so you never know what direction you're going or when you're going to fire, which leaves a bit too much up to chance for me. Planning is pretty much impossible. I think this game would be really cool if it was turn-based, or if you always knew when you are going to fire your arrow and what direction it would be each time. The game would involve a lot more strategy.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I was going to remove the random nature of the actions and create a set pattern for each level to help with the difficulty, but I ran out of time.  I would like to rework the game after the jam, and I'll take this advice into account.  Thanks for playing!

I totally get it. This has lots of potential.

Ok, I'll try it.

Okay I have to say that this game is really hard. It's like really hard to wrap my head around planning and surviving, let alone shooting the zombies and retrieving my arrow xD. I managed to kill one zombie and I felt pretty happy about that though. The shoot the arrow symbol isn't so clear, I was wondering how and why it was happening for a while there. I think you've nailed the theme idea though! Being able to only do one thing at a time is a cool mechanic and not being able to choose what that mechanic is makes it a real challenge! I think you made the enemy art nice and clear, it's easy to see that there is a difference between them. Nice work! :D

Thanks for trying out the game!  It sounds like the game might be too difficult, which I had figured.  If I ever update the game, I'll be sure to adjust the difficulty accordingly.  It's nice to hear that you thought the controls were cool though!  My team was pretty proud of the system we came up with, and I'm glad to hear that it payed off!

Hey there mate,

congrats on your first game jam and game! As I already told you it is the same for us. I find the controls quite original. At first one has a hard time but somehow it got something to it. I just played it a little bit now but will play it one more round later on. I like the concept! Music is great! Design super valid for a game jam. Congrats :) Left you a rating! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for leaving some feedback!  I had been wondering about the difficulty, and it sounds like it starts off a bit too hard (which I had worried about).  I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the controls, as I wasn't sure if it would be fun to play or not.  Again, thanks for playing!
