I liked the concept overall, was just a bit hard to aim. Overall, fun little game!
This is a fun concept, and I love the graphics and music. They're great. The one thing that stopped me from beating the game, though, were the controls. It's hard to tell where the hand is going to land as well as control the player. I think if you added some sort of targeting/drew something on screen to give the user feedback on where exactly they're headed would help a lot. That, and play around more with the physics although like Phil said, kudos for doing a physics game!
Ooo, also reading Griddolini's comment and completely agree about punching an enemy might cause you to get pushed back and such. Very Ori and the Blind Forest, actually!
I really like this chain idea, nice interpretation of the theme! Controlling it took some time though… but I'm no platformer god :) Kudos for tackling a physics based game. I also liked that you tried an uncommon visual style, and successfully so.
This was a fun and well rounded entry. I like the world map, it adds to the overall charm and positive vibe, and it was satisfying to clear all the stages on the map. Visuals were very clean and cute. I played through it twice :)
I can think of a few things that would make it just a little more unique and interesting. Firstly, the grapple mechanic could use some polishing; it worked fine but never really did what I thought it would. It feels like it's rigidbody based, so it might have been cleaner if you coded a simple back and forth swing with up+down shortening or lengthening the chain and just not bother with physics since they can be hard to get consistent.
I think the punching and grappling mechanics would meld perfectly if punching an enemy while midair pushed you in the opposite direction. This could add some really cool skill moments where you need to punch an eyeball to bounce off of it to reach the next grapple. I think it would've made the mechanics come full circle. And an additional visual effect or two when punching an enemy or box would've made it funner to whack stuff.
You know a game is in a good place when it immediately gives you ideas about possible additions, and I'm tempted to download the source and play with it. Great entry!
Thank you for the thoughts, and critique 🙂
You bring up very good points; the grappling hook is indeed rigid-body based infact it is based on a sequence of pin joints, which took a long time to implement, so sadly when i realized that is was a bit janky we had no time to re-implement it in a more deterministic fashion. i was hoping to more of a spiderman swining feel but alas.
If i every come around to fixing the swing, i will for sure try to implement your suggestions 🙂
And if you really dare to look at the code you are welcome, just be aware it is a hot bowl of jam spaghetti 😂
So, I played the game in its entirety. Here's my review:
THEME: 4 stars. Chain was definitely present, but destruction was a bit lacking
FUN: 4 stars. It was definitely fun, but could have been better. Swinging with the chain is hard but satisfying, but you don't get much chance to do that! Plus, the chain doesn't feel so much like a chain than an elastic, which is OK, I understand how hard it is to make a chain with good mechanics, but I would have prefered to have a chain that collides with the walls, still.
CONTROLS: 4 stars, they're intuitive and there. Maybe reassigning them would've been good.
GRAPHICS: Beautiful graphics, 5 stars. Just found the animation a bit lacking
AUDIO: 4 stars. Music is good, but sound effects don't fit
ORIGINALITY: 4 stars. A basic mechanic, that comes pretty fast, but well extended
TOTAL: 4 stars
Thanks for playing and reviewing the game <3. Also thanks for the compliment about the music <3
