This is great haha, I liked a lot of things about this one.

  • Quest indicators
  • Limited map movement so I don't waste time doing needless exploring
  • Really like how Harold starts off as a bumbling fool
  • Despite the Jam quality, you got a good atmosphere and mood going
  • Enjoyed the writing, for the most part wholesome and to the point
  • Lol'ed at Harold being caught in a net
  • Funny ending sequence

The only thing I would've preferred is faster combat, sometimes felt slightly grindy. This isn't uncommon in a jam game, but I only bring it up on this one because I enjoyed playing and wanted to progress the story without several+ turn combat.

This is a good example of a story-driven game/visual novel/interactive fiction that is not boring. The pacing is solid, there's lots of variety, and although everything is pretty "on rails," there's just that bit of challenge that keeps things interesting. Animations and other visual effects were used effectively, including in the battles. I couldn't even find any spelling or grammar errors. Well done!

A nice touching story on how Harold became a real hero! Good job!

HostSubmitted

Oh poor poor Harold. You made him fail so many times before he could become the hero!

Nice eventing and a touching short story with decent story-telling. Interesting bonus end scene too. That looks like it was probably hard to do.

What was the point of the cheese?

Developer

The cheese was meant to be involved in a humorous attack. Once you collect 5 stinky cheeses, you get the stinky cheese attack. You can also throw individual cheeses at enemies.

Thanks for reviewing!

Oh no missable secret! I got 3 or 4 cheeses (I also didn’t get to use grumpy Harold). I’ll need to check It out again.

Not a bad little game!! The battles were very well balanced. The story was slow at first but got really good. Great Job

Nice looking maps, and great work with all of the sprite pathing throughout.

The battles were fun, but very easy.

The cheese was a nice touch, and the ending sequence was wild.

I will admit that it often felt like the game was playing me, but the pathing was so good I was happy to be along for the ride.

I did like it, the ending was kind of unexpected but it all connects with the cheese lol, nice work

(Let me steal the format for reviewing the game!)

Spirit and essence of Harold:  It writes well on making Harold from a fake hero to true hero.

Fun:  The mechanics are mostly puzzles and battle system. The gameplay is okay , the story is a lot funnier to me. For the battle part, I think the balancing is done just right that I almost die there but survived!
Creativity: Good variety of mini games and scenes.
General Comments:  My suggestion is make the pacing of the story faster. I think it has taken too much time on making Harold being stupid. And 1-2 examples would be enough , unless there are important personalities or descriptions to add to Harold.

Harold: I like how you used an avatar character as the pseudo main ccharacter until it was Harold's time to prove himself. I liked how you taught the player to be confident yet use your head.

Fun: The game was pretty fun however, I would add a few more options in combat to make it more engaging. Of the character interactions and Harold's reckless were funny but like what I state above it was there to instill a lesson.

Creativity: You a nice pool of plugins to tweak the general feel of the game.

Overall, it was a charming game with a good lesson however, you could spice up combat just a little to make the complete experience more engaging.

Thanks for reviewing my game! I've updated the game, adding new battle skills and items.

Full Disclosure: I have an entry in the Jam.

Spirit and essence of Harold:  Harold is the center of attention
Fun:  Great game. It was entertaining and had a lesson to it.
Creativity:  Good use of plugins and custom graphics
General Comments:  If you have time to tweak the game before the deadline, I think the combat would feel more enticing if the mobs dropped some kind of loot - or increase the drop rate of of medicinal cordials. Also, consider healing the entire party when they arrive at the pirate island. RNGeezus was not kind and my party was already around 50% HP when they arrived and out of medicinal cordials. I barely survived the final battle - where they drop a ton of health items that were no longer useful.  Otherwise, very well crafted game.

Thanks for the review! I took up your suggestion and added a couple more items and increased the Medicinal Cordial healing to 100. I also added some new battle skills.
