Well, I loved it! I'm amazed at how much content you were able to create for this - like, 3 boss fights is just crazy - and each one is mechanically pretty different. Very impressive! The sound design and music were real nice as well.
A couple small critiques - it feels a little weird that the med kits don't at least heal a full health state, and there were times where I felt the camera was just a bit too far from the player. But beyond that, this is an amazing jam entry, congrats!
This is a highlight of the jam and most certainly one of the most polished and fully-fledged games. It's a surprise that you were able to do so much in the scope of a single jam! This is a great accomplishment and looking at your prior games it's clear you've progressed as a developer significantly.
As others have noted, this is a pitch-perfect interpretation of the Silent Hill games, with more of a surrealistic, Cthulhu sort of approach. The transitions are here, the fog is foggy, and the mechanics and fixed camera angles play perfectly. This is a great addition to the Haunted PS1 jam.
Narratively, the game is played fairly straight. There are few cues or items of contextual lore to find and most of the game is atmospheric and left to the player to explore. This isn't a bad approach - dispensing with the dialogue that most games rely on to set the mood means more focus on play.
The gameplay is pretty solid! The weapon mechanics - it's fantastic there are quite a few - all handle really well. The game has normal enemies and also a series of bosses that operate in a sort of Dark Souls approach as damage sponges that the player needs enough ammo - or the right weapon - to kill.
There are some minor puzzle elements, with keys and the damned switch/gate puzzle that took me ages to figure out how to do! I think one rule of switch puzzles is to make sure the player has a reasonably proximate feedback to what changes they make to the world around them.
I did a playthrough video below:
I cannot stress enough: this is a great addition to the jam, one of the most fully-fledged games from it, and was an absolute pleasure to play. Look forward to seeing what you do in future projects.
Oh, and I also found the hidden room! I love easter eggs.
I used all the first aid kit to the claw man, and I couldn't recover the physical strength that I'd spent fighting the later enemies. I've already come a long way from Starting Point to start over.
After being killed by a claw man, I was sent to a similar sewer, but I had already used up all the first aid kit. More than 100 bullets, but the first aid kit was so scarce that when I left the sewers, I was in "danger" condition.
Eventually, I died fighting a fishman monster and respawned again at Checkpoint, but hp was still a danger and no first aid kit.
I released a new version yesterday which has quite a few more medkits to find. Just download the latest version available on itch if you're still interested in playing this again :) Make sure it says Version 1.2 on the title screen. Might have been a bit too unfair in the previous version. Sorry about that
I really liked the authenticity of this; you really nailed the Resident Evil/Silent Hill feel! The boss fights were cool, and the combat was generally fun. I finished with a C rank, and having found 2 of the 4 secrets!
*fixed camera* "What? What is this? An RE1 Original? I hope this isn't FISHES blood!"
*Stair animation* "Wait...?"
*Door animation* "!!?!"
*Healing: Danger! Caution! Fine!* "I demand to marry the developer/s immediately!"
I grew up with and absolutely love Resident Evil games, so this was unexpected and just amazing, thank you for this game! My submission was based on RE8 but no where near this amount of amazingness!
Ps: "Yeah this is weird, I know. Play Oceanwork! "
Pps: I also have a hidden room but it's with Daruma, as I like to hide a Daruma in all of my games lol
Damn this is soo good. Best crate smashing simulator ever made.
Okay okay, I'm kidding. The game is seriously fantastic. The graphics, sound and music are all on point. It really evokes the retro feel of the PS1 without the jank.
Kind of feels like a 3-way love child of Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Dark Souls.
Finished in 34 minutes, 2 secrets and with a C rank. Took me way to long to figure out the final boss haha.
Only other thing was, noticed was on Linux, when enemies appear the sound cuts out.
Comments
Short and magnificent. A good game and a perfect translation of PS1 games.
Feel like I must be missing something obvious. Just run into the crab boss a few minutes in with 5 bullets and a useless axe.
You can't defeat it. Allow it to kill you.

Which version are you playing ? (you can see that in the bottom left corner of the title screen)

It's okay. I'm already pressing the download button again lol.
I'm your fan
This downloaded file is 1.2 version.
I'm going to enjoy the game again.

I got pinched by a crabman and sought revenge. I really liked the boss fights and overall execution of this one! Good stuff.

"I hope this isn't FISHES blood!" - Ohhh why haven't I thought of that? That would've been perfect! :D
Thanks for the kind words. Glad that you enjoyed the game :)
THIS IS GOOD. I HAVE NO WORDS.
