Fishing Isekai

by 65pts

Hey there 65pts, thanks for submitting a project to the 2022 IGMC. I was asked to judge your game in round two of the IGMC 2022 game jam. Here's some feedback about your project.

Cute title screen, nice BGM selection but I think adding a few more BGM tracks would be a great idea. In some areas there are no music and it felt really bare bones, especially since you kept the default MV sound effects. I'd say customize those too.

Why is it always a truck that hits the main character of every isekai? idk, it works I guess.

Very simple but satisfying fishing minigame.

The inn and many areas feel very empty and incomplete. Consider adding some treasure boxes here and there to speed up the playthrough a little bit. People will feel rewarded for their exploration of your world and surely would appreciate that as it would mean they have to do less grinding via fishing.

Furry dating sims are not really my thing, but every flavor has an audience.

You should probably allow the player to save everywhere unless you have a specific reason not to. Especially in a tech demo or game jam version of your game.

Although the clock/time system is not a novel idea, it's still cool to see that you've implemented it in your own way.

I like the fact that you've made your own custom pixel art for this title.

Like with many games it's what you make of it, and I can see some people getting lost for hours in this cute little world. Good job on making a chill atmosphere.

Thanks for submitting a game to the IGMC 2022, I hope that you keep making games and look forward to your next one.

This is quite a charming prototype! I think you can definitely go places with this because people are always looking for a good, chill game to relax to.

Thanks for sharing!

I briefly tried this out but it was in too obviously of an early state to really give it much time. Considering what you mention in the game page, makes sense, and I mean no nastiness. I'll give my points but feel free to ignore me.

  • The setup is fine enough, nothing special, but we can work with that.
  • The art assets that are there are cute, especially the sprites, but the maps and content are too obviously bare and unfinished for me to like them as they are now. The quality of them isolated is good, so a fully furnished game with them I'm sure would be nice.
  • You are a liar, that cow (and the chicken and chicks) are cute.
  • When I talk with people often it directly slaps me into the confession/gift screen. In a cleaner version you might want to make a separate command to prompt it, as having to back down out of that choice every time you talk to them would be very tedious. For an example, the Rune Factory series shelves those extra options behind a button input during their dialog, eg >talk to the npc >press extra button > opens extra choices.
  • I have no clue how to play the fishing game, and there really wasn't any instruction for me to manage.

Is this enjoyable for me as it is now? Honestly, no. Does it look like a good base you could work from? Yeah! The sprites are very cute and I can image a more complete game being very charming.

Good luck and good job getting anything done at all! No matter what it's always hard.

thank you for your feedback! i hadnt considered the specific hierarchy of the character interaction events so i wasnt sure why i was getting a similar error where the little dialogue bit was skipped but youre probably right. definitely something for me to consider in the future! the fishing minigame thing is worrying because it is the key mechanic of the game, and you can't really progress without it... i'm surprised i didnt consider a more in-depth control guide for it. once again, thank you!

I just want to preface this by saying I absolutely adored this game. It oozes charm, and has that nice, comfy, "good for playing on a rainy day" vibe that games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon have. The music is pleasant, the characters have fun designs and quirks, and the gameplay, while simple, is soothing. I also loved the touch of the color scheme changing depending on the time of day: that must have been a pain to implement, and it adds a really delightful atmosphere.
Sometimes all you wanna do is sit, fish, and sell your fish to buy gifts to impress the townsfolk you just met but would die for. It was even difficult for me to pick someone I wanted to pursue, as I found myself wanting to get to know quite a few of the characters. (I found myself getting close with Marinnel in particular, since he seemed cute and was easy to please with seashells)

In the future, I think it would be good to add different soundtracks matching with the time of day, but given this was a game jam that's a very minor nitpick. I would love to see this game and its premise further developed in the future! I had a really cozy time playing it.
Excellent work!

i'm really glad you enjoyed the game! ill admit the music was a bit of a last-minute thought, but i didnt even think abt different tracks for different times of day, thank you! and thank you for leaving a comment as well, i really appreciate the feedback!!
