This appeared to be more like a joke game at first glance and I wasn't expecting much from it. Which is probably good, because I didn't really get much from it. I do applaud the idea of a bunch of minigames set around a quest, and making your own assets, I just didn't enjoy the game very much and had no idea how to play it properly because I had to turn down the sound so no visual text let me know what to do.
Voice overs are all well and good, but some times people can't or don't have music/sound playing in games (or they can't hear well) and thus text in conjunction with sound is always the better idea.
This looks like a really nice idea. I loved the game concept. But I think you need a lot of work on the art. You can keep the art style, but just animating it would make it really better I guess :)
Yeah, seeing if I can get animation into my current game. I know it is something I need to work on but it isn't the easiest thing. Yeah, what I like best about this is there can pretty much be infinite levels, since fears span everything. Thanks for playing.
Game can be downloaded from the game page.
Play the windows version. The original song in this is well worth it alone.
I beat the first level and closed the game not knowing that the game kept going >.> I don't feel like doing it again so I'll leave my impressions up until that point:
+ At first, the game graphics scared me off in a bad way but you actually managed to mix all simplistic resources (sprites, words, music...) into a very unique style that works somehow. The lyrics was a nice little touch and fun :P
- The controls and direction are not very intuitive. This could be improved but I had no trouble beating the first level after I got the hang of it. It certainly entertained me for the short while I played.
+/- The level design works as it is. But there are certain things that bothered me like having low visibility. I didn't know where I was going at some moments! It'd be nice to zoom out everything and make the map loop.
Rate: I give it 2/5 because while it has personality to it, it needs more polishing (mainly on the controls).
Good luck!
Akumu Games, did you play the Windows build? At this point I feel I should take down the web build, cause the Windows build did have the levels more zoomed out. Also, it is tough to judge only part of a game. Thanks for the feedback and playing, though.
Oh, my bad. I played the browser version >.< Maybe I can give it another try later :)
Yeah I was thinking of making it more like Pacman.
Yeah I will have to play both to see how different they are let me check with the judges if I can upload a new browser version. Not sure if I raised the doubt count to 5 on the browser version
Shield doesn't seem to work. Very unintuitive control setup. I recommend switching to mouse attacks with left-click being the attack and right-click switching between shield and sword. Extremely hard to catch the clowns. This definitely falls into Nintendo-hard territory.
Is space to attack not intuitive or was it the weapon switching? I personally hate mouse controls. I did want the game to be difficult, but I am amazed how much trouble people are having. Did you play the Windows build?
My primary problem was the numbers keys. I really can't think of any good way to do this with just the keyboard. You need the keyboard to move and you need it to attack and change between accessories. Three things you have to do with two hands. Ctrl+space or shift+space would be better if you don't want to use mouse. With the mouse, though, there's an intuitive interface. With one finger attacking and the other switching weapons, there's very little hand movement necessary. The more the player is moving his hands, the more trouble he's having with controls.
I used the browser version. Would the Windows version have been a different experience?
Yes, did not get a chance to compile a new web based version and assumed everyone would play the Windows version, since the judges are. The windows version has an easier public speaking level and more zoomed screen and can't go off the screen in lion level. Also, the audio is different on the public speaking and the final boss spouts phrases when attacked.
Please play the Windows build, since that is what the judges will be rating also.
Thanks. That song actually made me smile and brought a little tear to my eye when playing that level. My favorite level I made. Kind of wish I did some more interesting things with words.
At the request of the developer, I played the game and am offering my feedback here. I'll open that out of 5 stars, I would give this a 2 in its current state. So let's take a look at why that is with a good ol' fashion pros and cons list.
Pros
with the exception of the shield. EDIT: The developer addressed this, and the shield now feels great!Cons
You have a sword and shield option, but the shield really seemed useless.I took damage even when clearly blocking with it(see above edit).I couldn't beat the clown area at all. EDIT: Can now beat clown area BUT the lions are stupid hard. They hit you even you aren't touching them and they themselves are very hard to hit with the sword. As it stands, there is potential here. Not everything is working in harmony, but the game has charm. Some may find it frustrating because in its current state it is rather difficult, but if you can look past that, it is worth at least trying out.
A note for the developer, be sure to include a Windows executable for IGMC 2018 or the judges will not count your game. I would hate for you to be disqualified over that :(

Thanks for the feedback Jon, yeah that would be a very sad ending to be DQed due to an unplayable version. Maybe I should just increase the size of the shield and hitbox. The Green box is directly to the left of the red box. Yeah some people love the rushed art style and others hate it. I personally enjoy what I draw but also know it clearly is not professional. Maybe the clown area was not clear, after defeating 10 clowns you walk into the circus tent. Maybe I should add a giant green arrow or play that after the intro dialogue. I am happy you gave a Pros and Cons list.
No problem :) I'm always happy to offer a thought or two if I have the time. I think that increasing the shield improvement you suggest here would be a good move. As for the vibes area, I couldn't even find the red box XD Maybe I'm just blind? I hear ya on the drawing, the important thing is that you enjoyed making it. More power to ya, don't let my personal taste bring ya down any :) Clown area sounds like you have a good solution for because it was a bit unclear. Also, killing the clowns is a bit tough, they move a tad too quick. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the pros and cons list. I feel like you should always say something you liked for every few things you didn't. I don't want to make folks feel bad or anything, ya know?
Hopefully I can get that 2 up to a 4 or so. Boss battle is still pretty lame but I'll finish adding all the story tomorrow and will give me two days to polish everything up. Need to tell myself no new code, just adding aesthetic stuff.
I'll happily take another look once you have it updated :) Of course, I'll give a formal rating once the voting period actually opens up
Thanks, do we also rate on 1-20 scale?
I have no clue. The judges do for sure but the people might just do the plain five star thing.
I hope we get 1-20. 1-5 is such a bad rating system
The art in this game, while it is custom, does not mean that it's good. The combat is incredibly boring as well as the mapping. The only good part of this game IMO is the VA
Thanks for the direct review.
Did you play all three levels?
Have some suggestions, then?
I suggest reworking the combat to make it a tad more immersive and redoing some of the maps to make them less tedious.
I wanted an openworld feel sadly with the short time left, not sure I can update much, but thanks for playing and the review. Immersive in what sense, what more sounds and effects?
Exactly, sounds and such are a judging category
yeah, there are sound effects but for some reason they are not triggering.current goal is to get a boss fight done. Then hopefully on Thursday I can polish things up.
I'll have to play your game.
Would love feedback on the concept and maybe levels people would want to see. The game's theme pretty much allows anything.
