The game looks great and plays reasonably well for what it is -a prototype. The graphics and sound are very cute and the style is lovely - music fits in well with the different areas. There are issues, however. More than a few times the enemies will not be harmed by jumping on them. There's also no instructions to figure out how to play the game in the game itself - you need to press various buttons to figure that out and try things out to see if they work.
The maps are quite large at times and you don't really fun fast, so it can be a little annoying to get around. Because the maps are so large, a lot of details are just spread out and make the areas seem less interesting than they should be. This is why the desert map was my favourite (aside from the kicking music) - it made use of large mountainous structures and twisting areas to create a sort-of maze area. Thus it was more decorated and had less empty room than the rest of the maps did.
There's also some places where you are reset as though you fell in water/off the world that don't make sense. The last stage has a bug with the coin counting - if you get over 100 it only shows the first two numbers. There is also an issue on start-up where if you chose a windowed option in the pre-game settings it ignores your choices and makes the game full-screen anyway.
The game itself isn't hard - you can avoid all the enemies and getting the coins isn't really necessary for anything. There's no real aim to the game but to get to the end of each stage, which is a very easy thing to do. As an example of visual and sound styles the game is quite nice. As an example of gameplay, it leaves a bit to be desired.
It's ultimately lovely to look at and presents a very pretty world with a cute character and great music, however as a game it's really not that fun to play, feeling rather lifeless and pointless.
Hey silversatyr, thanks for the feedback and the Youtube play through! Seeing someone else play shows me things that I couldn't see being so close to the project.
As I have mentioned in a previous comment, level design / level layout isn't my strong point, but I do believe that with each game that I make that I get a bit better, plus feedback such as yours points me in the right direction.
Also, other basic game design things I have to remember for the future is to add a how to play or how to control screen, probably during the loading screen or splash screen. The jump and you die bug I never encountered, so thanks for spotting that for me. Also, I didn't realize that the coin counter reset after 100. I added the extra coins to try and "pad" the length of the game. I also agree that the game could have used some sort of in-game back story or explanation for the reason why you kill bugs and collect coins. The size of the levels vary from small to large, so coming up with a good traverse speed is a bit difficult, but something that I'm sure I'll get right in a future game. Finally, about the difficulty level, I did want the game to be like an E for everyone, and I wanted my 3 year old daughter to be able to have a relatively easy time playing it, but I agree the challenge could have been ramped up.
Thanks again for the feedback! Hopefully a future game will be a much better example of a proper 3D platformer!
This is just adorable.
Thanks gaelicdream! I'm glad that you found some enjoyment in my little game! Cheers!
I mean aside from it looking good it was really well made as well. :)
