It even inspires me to make a roll dice game too! Very fun and nice to play.  +Recommend!

(What is "Yacht" combination?)

Developer

Yacht is 5 dice of the same number.

Dice rolling is a neat idea, good job. I agreed with Psynut, you should output a message like "Dice # = #". I am pretty new to game development, so I feel inexperienced to suggest room for improvement much.  Good job again :)

There are a lot of good things here. It's a nice spin on the Yahtzee game. The music reminds me a lot of some of the Monopoly VG iterations out there -- it's fitting.

I've been very talented at breaking games this jam... apparently pressing space while dice are rolling screws things up.

It would be really helpful to have a UI or something clarify what the dice are showing. With the 3D figures on a 2D screen it's sometimes hard to tell what each die reads.

Thanks!

It looks like you did a lot of good improvements to your previous version!

Because you want to improve the dice for later, I will be picky so you have lots to work with. This is all my opinion, so take and leave what you want:

  • So, I think the camera following all the dice through the tower is a little weird. I'd rather watch them go in on the top, and relatively quickly rotate down to watch them pop out the bottom.

  • Upon re-rolling, I would love to see the dice swoop up to the top of the tower.

  • Oddly enough for me, I wanted to select the dice to keep instead of selecting the dice to re-roll. I would like to see the dice selected to be kept to be instantly set on the table next to the dice tower.

  • Don't make me enter the nothing selection of "Keep all the dice" when I have no more re-rolls available, just move on to the scoring selection.

  • The music is nice.

  • The dice tapping against the inside of the tower gets old very fast. Perhaps a single sound recording of "a bunch of dice falling through the tower" played once per roll would do you better. Ideally you would have a few different sound files to randomly choose from for each number of dice thrown, to keep the sound fresh.

  • The bouncing around takes a while, could you make gravity happen faster? or make it more interesting by having a clear/tinted front of your tower so I can watch them bounce around.

  • A selected dice looks too similar to a non-selected dice, maybe light it up or change the outline, or add a check mark or something?

  • A selected dice hovering up does not bring it's collision box with it, so to de-select the player needs to click under where the dice used to be.

  • I would love the visuals of the saved dice to look like the shape the dice was, as opposed to all of them being square.

I made some changes to the camera and the physics of the dice falling, and also made the front of the tower see-through. I also changed it so you go straight to score select after your second reroll. I haven't updated the game on itch, but I made a quick video to show those changes off if you don't mind taking a look and telling me what you think: https://twitter.com/Shiiro_10psi/status/1553526713858117632

I did the camera and physics things first because those are the most portable parts. If I do any more updates to this game however I will take some more of your suggestions. I think for the reroll selection I would change it so that the selected dice move to a separated part  of the tray off to the side, and then stay there while the unselected dice are rerolled. That way it would be much clearer which dice will be rerolled.

The collision boxes not moving was an effect of me setting time scale to 0 to stop the dice from falling back down when they are selected and move up. I changed it so that the dice's rigidbody ignores gravity and locks all constraints instead, so the collision moves with the die now.

I do agree that the dice sounds aren't perfect, so I will probably try to record some of my own to get some more variety.
