Ok, warning, I'm not super fond of horror in general. I tried my best to stay unbiased.
Starting with the UI, the changed of background per different situations was smart, as well as the slightly moving text. There may have been a few passages where I think the background was working for the first half of the text but no the second one (too red or not red enough), but that can be a bit hard to gauge. I also think the moving text would have been a bit more effective if it had been a bit more glitchy (for the vibe). There were a few formatting issues (most visible was the passage where you don't end up napping).
I loved Erika as a character and could feel how tired she must have felt working to the bones at this job. I do feel bad for poor Dr. Skalvis still working at his age (how is he not dead...).
The ending I ended up getting was not as satisfying as I thought it would have been. I think I was expecting a bit more dread/horror-y having failed to jump over the rubble. I talked to everyone and relaxed, and since it seems to matter, I think I need to replay it and be a bit more of a dick?
Still, the game was really nice. I hope I don't get nightmares tonight :P
EDIT: ended up being a dick and it still feels a bit weird? I did like the variation in the text though, especially in the dream part. Maybe it's just not my type of game. Nice experience overall.
Thank you for leaving such a comprehensive review! I really appreciate it.
Yeahhhh, I really wanted to get the UI to look nicer but I unfortunately ran out of time. If I do polish the game and do a full release, I would 100% change that to make it easier to read + fix the formatting issues. I definitely have ideas, but still working out how to er, code them LOL.
The endings were definitely not as polished as I would have liked them to be. I was also a little bit worried about it getting too gory/disturbing for the jam's rules, but it was mostly time that resulted in me having to cut the ending significantly (and by significantly, I mean all four endings were supposed to have several choices to make and potentially utilize a paranoia counter that I didn't get to add in). I do hope to make the ending more fulfilling/psychological horror-esque after the jam, though!
I get it completely, the last third of my submission is me running out of time and it's messy compared to the rest. I think you didn't need to go further with the gore, but have that last passage be a tiny bit less vague. It probably needed one or two more paragraph to get that scary/anxious feeling for the reader to give it a proper punch.
I will be following how this game pan out if you continue with it. I did enjoy it quite a lot!
Thank you so much! She's one of my older characters, so I'm glad to see folks liking her! And yes, I'd definitely consider doing that! It's not too difficult at the moment, just (spoilers ahead, but they're pretty vague) based on how much/how little certain characters are talked to. There are 4 endings in total right now - I hope to add in some more after the jam's rankings are over, though!
I liked the fading backgrounds, it made the first really spooky part hit all the harder. Neat game!
Thank you! They were fun to figure out as sort of a last minute visual aspect of the game, as I unfortunately lacked time to do any proper artwork for the game.
I thought the writing was really well done, and the background images on the UI really helped sell the story. Nicely done!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
