Rules clarification

Sounds fun.

Any guidance around asset sourcing?

I've done the Ludum Dare 48 compo a few times and they're pretty specific about what outside resources are allowed (e.g. http://ludumdare.com/compo/rules/ ).

Also, similar question regarding groups. Are we allowed and/or encouraged to work in groups?

Thanks!

The main thing is that what you're doing, should be legally releasable. So if you have the rights to distribute the artwork in the game, then you should be able to submit it! As this is the first edition, we're also still learning how things work, so I think that the Ludum Dare guidelines are a pretty good basis, not just for jams, but for releasing games in general.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Is it against the rules to re-upload a smaller build of the game after submission? Unfortunately, we (Chris and Kyle from Brutiful Games) only had time to do a fast build which caused the file size to somewhere around 111 MB. With the new build, it's been condensed to 26 MB. If not, we understand that there's no way to tell whether or not we tried to sneak in modifications after the deadline. In the end, we're simply worried that the large file size and wait to play is keeping people from playing.

There is actually an easy way to tell, and lots of people are doing it ;)

Just check the submission feed.at http://itch.io/jam/js48-1/feed - you can see who changed their submission when. The timestamp seems to be GMT though, no timezones taken into account.

That's cool. However, in the submission feed, it looks like only submission has uploaded a new build. This is our first game jam, so we're uneducated on the usual protocols. It doesn't say it in the rules, however, it doesn't seem logical to be able to alter your project after the deadline???

Our first game jam as well! :) I'm pretty sure it's not intended. Unfortunately it just seems to be the way itch works :(. Either way, I'm staying away from any post-deadline changes, just in case.

Indeed, it's a weird quirk that itch allows updates after the game jam is over. I'm going to take your word for it that it was just to make the build smaller. Next time we'll definitely be looking at other jam options (or roll our own) - this is a good learning experience for us as jam hosts, and we really appreciate the feedback! Thankfully, we did play them all as they were submitted, so the final judges decisions - outside of the community votes - won't really be affected by late updates.

Right on. Thank you. We will go ahead and upload the smaller build now.
