New to game jams. How do I price, submit etc.?

Hi, I'm new to making games but I played them for a while with friends. I got interested in Lost & Found jam while browsing and I'm planning to write about old cars that get passed through generations and different hands. But I have some questions about what to do and hope someone could help.

  • I feel like whatever I write sounds really similar to Buckets and Bolts. I'm following the game's format because I don't really know what to do otherwise. The content is different but I don't know if this is fine?
  • I saw other game jams where creators put a price tag on their games. Should/Could I do this and what price would you all suggest? I know Bucket and Bolts and Artefact are ten dollars but it seems steep for what I'm writing.
  • I read about copyright but don't know how to attribute my game. Should I just put something like 'Made with the Lost & Found SRD by Jack Harrison/Mousehole Press' or is there a 'right' way to do it?

Hey! I’ll have a go at answering these.

I feel like whatever I write sounds really similar to Buckets and Bolts.

Direct copying of text of those games is prohibited, but it’s unsurprising if what you’re writing sounds similar. Are you more concerned about the rules or the prompts/questions?

I saw other game jams where creators put a price tag on their games.

Pricing is a tricky one. If you’re proud of what you made, I’d recommend charging at least $1 for it, probably $5. If someone is interested in the pitch and you’ve executed on it, it’s probably worth at least that.

I read about copyright but don’t know how to attribute my game.

There are a couple of examples of attribution on the bottom of the licensing page. One of those with the link to the SRD would be perfect.

Thank you for the reply!

I'm more concerned about rules because what I'm writing isn't deviating much from the original. I'm paraphrasing to avoid this right now.

That’s probably to be expected — there are only so many ways to describe the same process! Remember that everything in the SRD is cool to copy (except examples from my games) so that should help with rules explanation.

Thank you for the advice! I'll keep this in mind.
