There are some neat ideas here but the game feels half-finished.
Conceptually, the gameplay is a good idea. Tower defense with a player character and some light card elements. I think there are some good mechanics here, but I didn't really get to play with them.
I wasn't able to beat the first level, in fact I died very quickly. Only the two towers on the right seemed to be able to hit any enemies, they weren't very effective, I wasn't able to upgrade them and once the enemies get past the towers there's no way to attack or effectively evade them.
The tutorial is useless- it explains a mechanic that I never even got to see, and doesn't tell me how to place towers or survive or even what the controls are.
The graphics are pretty nice. It reminds me a bit of old Flash games- a style which I've seen in this jam a lot more than I had expected.
The lack of audio is a huge downer. I'm assuming you ran out of time, but I'd rather see fewer mechanics or missing graphics than no audio at all.
This is a neat concept - a tower defense + card + side scroller game - but it wasn't executed well.
Having A and D keys for movement instead of the arrow keys is OK, if a bit unconventional for a sidescroller. Involving the mouse doesn't make sense to me; why have the player click on the map to place towers instead of have them placed next to the player character in the direction they are facing? Furthermore, I could not get the tower menu to appear consistently, and would occasionally get the shop to open instead.
The thing that hurt this game the most was the attempt to throw too many mechanics together:
I never got past the first wave because of these issues. Perhaps this will work better with more refinement?
i will make pause mode when card menu is open...
Thanks
i would say it's more like the genre mashup of tower defend and platformer (although it's not available ). The game system is working with no obvious bug, which is good. I feel the concept of "a platformer game that you parkour around to guide enemies to your traps/towers" seems protential, so the next step is to polish the gameplay.
Thanks..
This is tower defense + cards with platforming elements mixed in, and I must say it is pretty cool concept and a pleasant surprise to discover that Jane can double jump, glide and dash. Though the card elements are rather weak, as they are just one-off upgrades, but judging from the main menu, I suppose there wasn’t enough time to implement more cards and the intricacies of their effects/interactions. I love Jane’s design and the little animations give her character. The short intro on stage 1, although may seem insignificant, is very much appreciated to give her some backstory/purpose. This is something I feel magical girl games should at least have a focus on, and it’s nice to see that Magical Defender holds this value important.
In terms of gameplay, the mechanics are there but it simply lacked the content. While the lack of audio makes it seem unpolished, it is bug-free and there is a fair amount of movement options to traverse to your tower locations (or dodge enemy attacks) and set them up which I find pretty cool. Currently there’s not a lot of strategy involved since there is only the starting level, but I can imagine this being quite awesome if it was developed further.
Overall, I had a bit of fun playing it. Keep it up!
thanks .. i will update the game soon ..
Just to confirm your answer to the last questionnaire. You answered yes (graphics); does this mean that the audio are purchased assets?
