Metroidvania Approach

I find it interesting how Metroidvania games are made, but I’m not exactly a big fan of platformers. I’ve done a lot of research in places like this, this, and this, but I still wonder: should I go for a platformer, or take a different approach?

What I will or won’t do depends on the theme announcement, since I want to follow it closely in my game. However, I’d love to explore the possibilities I have. Maybe my preference comes from playing a lot of RPGs like Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Baldur’s Gate, and others. I’d like to mix elements from these games and create something in that direction.

Would it still be considered a Metroidvania? Of course, I’d keep the core focus on the genre and its main characteristics, as covered in the links I shared—at least from what I’ve seen and understood.

imho:

I'm a fan of 2D platform videogames genre.

But metroidvania become from Metroid and Castlevania. Both sagas have games 3D with "simil" open world and rgps elements
