Use of the limitation
I was thinking about things filling a health bar that you could stack and use for damage and tetris came to mind as the most refined essence of that. Every block puts you closer to death, but clearing blocks gives you score and in this game clearing also helps defeat monsters that actively disrupt and try to kill you.

Really cool twist on Tetris, and an interesting use of the limitation. I like it.

Developer

I wanted to reward stacking higher more, I didn't actually get around to implementing tetris and t spin bonuses, so there's not that much incentive to stack blocks higher and put yourself closer to death. I did add a combo multiplier for damage to the monsters which sort of does that, really wanted to do some more to get the more of the skirting with death idea into the game.

On the face of things, it just seems like a good tetris remake. But as I played more and dug down further, I realised it was really cool twist on it! Well done, I just wish I was better at tetris haha

Developer

I do notice the ramp up speed is pretty rough, I actually wanted to do an upgrade system with stuff like resetting the game speed or more hold slots to let people score longer runs so that it'd be a touch easier even for people who aren't doremy

I didn't really understand at first how to get to the monsters. I was just too busy enjoying the tetris!

Developer

Yeah I was running thin on time to do effects and indicators. How'd you like the monsters though, which ones did you hit on your runs?

Careful with this — the word Tetris and the song Korobeiniki are trademarks of The Tetris Company, who are known for being more litigious than Nintendo.

in terms of gameplay, how is this any different from a standard game of tetris? nothing special seemed to happen during my entire playthrough

The monsters spawn after you clear 5 rows of the dirt at the bottom. I put a little indicator of a person going down a track on the side to indicate how far you are to the next monster encounter, maybe could have made the indicator more obvious that you want to be clearing down and not just playing tetris on top of the dirt. The tris suffix I figured would be safe given how many unaffiliated versions out there exist that share that name fragment, the music I grabbed off freesound although it might be that freesound's not always safe

I was referring not to the name “DelveTris” but to the tagline “Tetris your way…”. And the song from freesound, ignoring TTC’s trademark, is licensed under CC-BY 4.0. Which means your game or its description must contain a specific bit of text stating who made this rendition of the song and where it came from.

As for the dirt: my playthrough had no dirt at the bottom, just a smattering of what looked like bloody knives

Developer(+1)

Oh whoops, fixed up those bits in the text.

If you were getting rows with knives at the bottom then you reached a monster. I wanted to do some hit/attack sounds and effects so that it'd be more obvious when a monster's attacking but only had time to do a little flash on the side when the monster appears. There's some amount of variance in how disruptive the enemies I made are, I do like where I had the monster that sticks knives in your pile at, just think I could have sold it a bit more if I had time to do some effects for all the enemies, there's only maybe two where their presence is very overtly obvious without any extra visual effects
