Tl;dr - ENTRIES FOUND CONTAINING CINNAMOROLL OR SANRIO REFERENCES WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED FROM MOUSE JAM 2024!

Hey there Mouse Jammers! The first submissions have come through, and we're excited to judge your games and see Mouse play them on stream for subathon.

We know many of you are still working till the very end, but we needed to highlight a rule that might affect some of your entries.

  • No individual or team shall create, distribute, or publish games that include characters, logos, names, or any other elements that are copyrighted or trademarked by other entities without obtaining explicit permission from the copyright or trademark holders.

The second half of the rule is the kicker. This includes references to Cinnamoroll or other Sanrio characters. We know how much Mouse loves him, but please respect Mouse and any relevant copyright holders during the game jam. Please do not  attempt to circumvent this rule with Cinnamorolls-at-home or other slight variations.

ENTRIES FOUND CONTAINING CINNAMOROLL OR SANRIO REFERENCES WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED FROM MOUSE JAM 2024!

We know making last minute changes like this can be stressful, but we appreciate all of you for accommodating this and can't wait to play your games!

Does this apply for parodies of other properties and such, like products in a store for our jam game?

So like parody video games with VShojo characters on them or a funko pop-esque figurine of Bubi for example? Is there a way to get in direct contact before we submit to get confirmation on certain items made for our game?

Jam Judge

Those examples should be fine, Sanrio is the one I would recommend avoiding to prevent any issue

Probably not great timing, but would a character called Cinnabaroll with a B be considered copyright infringement? He also has a different face design >:( instead of the classic :3. These plushies are always referred to as "the iconic legally distinct Cinnabaroll plushie".

I would really love to know if that could cause an issue, hope i still have time to find that out.

With the information you have provided we would have to DQ you as that way too close to Sanrio IP

We have seen others change the color scheme to a Monkey and completely drop the name comparison and it should be fine

Submitted

does that mean that if i just change their name to something random like "John the dog" it would be fine?

Jam Judge

After seeing the pic, changing the name and the color pallet would both be required to ensure Sanrio IP has no issue.

The game is grayscale though, so im not sure that a monkie plush would look that much different. I will try my best to redact it though. Thanks for the answer.

Jam Judge

If it cannot be fixed before entries closed, you can fix it after judging before Mouse plays it. We'll only DQ if its time for Mouse to play and Sanrio IP concerns remain.

Given the color scheme chosen, the design might need to be changed to be more clear this is nothing to do with Sanrio

Thank you! I will submit it today without too many changes, but by the time the votes are over I will replace all of them with proper Monkeys! That obviously being the only replacement done to the game, so that I wouldn't break any other rules.

(Just in case, today's version already has all mentions of the name replaced to "monke plush")

Jam Judge

Sounds good, appreciate your understanding

Here's the updated version just in case! Legal troubles bye-bye! B)

Perfect! I assume the final room is similarly fixed then we have no issues
