The game I'm making for the My First Game Jam: Summer Edition is Saving Private RY-4N. It follows the optional theme of taking twists on popular stories.
If it wasn't obvious from the title, it's a twist on the popular tale of Saving Private Ryan. Before you jump off the thread in disgust of "Oh great, another WWII game", that's where the other story I'm twisting into this to make a nice game pretzel: Star Wars (Not the prequels). Yes, this is going to be Saving Private Ryan for stormtroopers on the Death Star (a Death star?). The story centers on a group of troopers who are on janitor duty as a prison break occurs. The prisoners take your friend, trooper RY-4N, hostage along with a few other troopers and lead them to the other end of the Death Star in order to capture a shuttle to escape. It turns out that the other hostage troopers were actually spies who stole the Death Star plans. Shortly after this, RY-4N's life readings stop transmitting, leading HQ to assume he is dead. However, RY-4N leaves you a video message letting you know that he is hiding in the hangar, and deactivated his life sensors to hide for longer. Your mission is to save RY-4N from the rebels in time and stop the plans from being taken.
Genre: Top-Down Shooter
Planned Features-
Art style reminiscent of Berzerk (but maybe a little more advanced)
Droids randomly roaming the halls
Realistic stormtrooper action (and I mean realistic)
Multiple playable characters/ playstyles
This is my first game, so I mainly just hope to have fun and get something published by the end of the jam.
[Second Post]
So, it's now a little over half an hour until the jam finishes, and it's almost done!
Featrues Completed-
Berzerk-ish Art Style
(Mouse) Droids Roaming the halls
Realistic Stormtrooper action!
I didn't get the multiple playstyles/ characters done, as I realised the other playstyles I came up with were either too similar or too game-breaking to properly implement. So to make up for it, I made an actual Star Wars crawl for the game's opening (Because I can't figure out how to put it in the game...)
Here's the link: http://www.starwars.com/games-apps/star-wars-crawl...
If I could embed it here, (and I probably can somehow) I would, but I really need to finish the last little bit of level design and get this game posted before I run out of time.
Wish me luck!
