Once upon a time in a distant forest, a little frog donned a nettle leaf hat and began a noble quest….

Nettle's Quest is a game about the adventure of Nettle the frog.  For generations the frog family has cared for the nettle plant, each forming a unique bond with it. Now a new chapter of that story begins! Help Nettle find the magic spring to continue the cycle of care and figure out what bond awaits them…

Game play will be primarily exploration and dialogue. Hop around to explore the world and talk to characters to find out what they need. Help those characters to uncover lore and continue your quest to find the magic spring. This is achieved through a trade chain and useful items you can find around the world. Once you find the magic spring, you must water the nettle plant and choose...what fate awaits Nettle the frog?

DAY 1:

Several members are out of town at the moment so beginning progress is a bit slow but will improve dramatically.

  • Started prepping the skeleton of the game.
  • Imported some fonts.
  • Started working out a dialogue system and some placeholder dialogue.
  • Drafted some background lore and started looking for sound effects

The main priorities right now are the dialogue system, movement system, and overworld map.

DAY 2:

Today Jyzavi finished setting up the dialogue system! It’s a script so instead of having to write a whole big thing out every time we want dialogue we can just call the script with the text we want to show. Also, Newt made a lovely parchment scrap for the text to display on.

The cool thing about this is that instead of printing the whole line at once, it prints out each letter with a little typing sound. It feels real nice!

The main priorities right now are the movement system and the overworld map.

DAY 3:

NOTE:  current art is placeholder for testing and does not represent the intended look of the game.

Jed set up the movement system! The gif above shows how that handles. It's A and D or right and left arrows to move and space to jump! Jyzavi finished writing all the dialogue. Now that needs to get plugged in to the npcs. We also worked out what items are needed for the trade chain in the game.

The main priorities now are the overworld map and main menu.

Nettle's a frog so we wanted to make their jump really snappy! When on the ground, Nettle's mobility is limited, but in the air Nettle's mobility is greatly increased and has a jump height dependent on how long the player presses the jump button.

DAY 4

Jyzavi rounded up some sound effects but has to edit them before they can be added to the game. Jed reworked the movement a bit to make it feel better. He also started plugging in the dialogue and set up the speaking options!

Meanwhile, Newt plotted out the level design and worked on developing the overworld map.

DAY 4: (part 2)

Finally, CuteCartoonsAndCoffeeStains worked out the character design for Nettle and one of the NPCs!

In conclusion, please enjoy the bonus Nettle With Leggy.
