Hello, I'm trying to make a game where you make a bday cupcake, get flowers for your best friend, and celebrate their birthday! It is a short and jolly experiment of mine with Ren'Py. I planned this for like 10 days ago I think and listed some stuff a bit. This is my second time joining a game jam so I wanted to do this write(pun intended) with a devlog.

 Content/Features:

- Short story

- Decent music and sfx

- 1 simple ending

- Simple beginner art (I'm no professional artist)

- Cupcake making

- Choosing the color of the flowers

- Available for windows and mac (hopefully mac works)

To do:

- Draw a load ton of backgrounds/images

- Write the scripts

- Change the settings, design, and other not so complex stuff

- Find good and free to use music and sfx then add them

- Test with my family

- Cleanup and make sure things are working and good

- Repeat again but this time better

Seems like a lot of work but I think it's managable.

Forgot about the timezones damn

Day 1:

Since I am a young obedient boy that lives with my parents, chores are always on my way so finding the right time is hard for me, still I continued. While browsing through the web, I found the perfect website for free to use background music and sfx and implemented it on my game. I'll be using the two site's music/sfx althrough out my game because I'm no musician and too shy to ask help for others because of cyberhumilliation.

Anyways, I also found a nice beautiful font to use  for my game. I made art  for the main menu screen, splash screen, cursor. and other gui stuff... in fact I did all of the gui stuff today. To be honest, it's looks decent.

Main Menu Screenshot

Notice the irregular form of the cupcake, well the thing is... I challenge myself to never search what a cupcake looks like. I am no artist and I sometimes easily forget things.

Tomorrow I guess I'll be working on more art and the story.

That cupcake looks very much like something I'd bake :) The main menu looks great!

awww this premise is so sweet, and honestly i think it's really fitting for a 2 week jam. this main menu looks great so far! you can actually embed images in your posts as well--its the last button in the formatting options. good luck in the jam! i can't wait to see more!

Day 2:

I was washing the dishes that I my devlog is late... for me atleast, because it's like 12:20 AM already. Anyways...

So I worked on the story and drew the kitchen, this is where the player is going to bake. The baking part is where you choose what flavor of the cupcake you are going to make and what color of the cup you are going to put the cupcake in. I knew it will be very hard to draw all of the combinations so I separated the cup and the cake.

Again, the cupcake looks weird. Since I'm too lazy to change it because i am preoccupied and still has chores to do at home most of the time, I just made it look like the player kind of made a mistake with the baking.

Cupcake Example & Screenshot

I don't want to reveal too much because the excitement might disappear when you are aware of what is about to happen, so I guess I'll just keep it short and give a bit of a teaser. I'm still changing some stuff so this wont really be the final.

Day 3  4:

I forgot to write a devlog yesterday because of chores, so sorry about that. I also forgot to mention that I setup a page before day 2 and I'm trying to have a windows, mac, and html. Anyways...

I made the flower scene, where the player will go outside to buy flowers (specifically tulips) at any color the player chooses. I have finished that scene's story and art. I drew the gardener, the flower shop, and all of the tulip stuff... Unfortunately, the art of the part where the player is outside walking and talking sucks, so I'm changing it.

This is a part of the flower shop scene

Holy grail that's too big!... *cough*...

As I mentioned before, I'm trying to have html so most of my day was spent trying to figure how to setup this and that, and making my page look beautiful. Tomorrow, I'll finish the street background and other stuff. I might actually finish it tomorrow or tomorrow tomorrow.

Day 5, Last day i think:

I have already finished all of the art and scripts, tested it, and made the windows and mac apps. I also removed the html thing because I noticed that for people who has slow internet like mine, it's practically useless. Imagine, I have to upload 3 medium sized files with slow internet, thats crazy! So I had to remove one atleast (the HTML).Also, since the file size is medium and I have slow internet, it's taking a severely long time to upload, so maybe later, when noone is using the wifi anymore, I will be able to upload a mac and windows version.

This just took 5 days to make, that's cool. I could've made it faster if I am not busy with chores all the time. I mean, I'm the one who cooks rice, washes a load ton of dishes and other equipments, do other errands... man, it's crazy. Oh right, this is my first time making a devlog btw so I still dont understand what to do so... yeah...

Finally, I have uploaded the windows and mac version of MBFsBday and published it. Now I can submit it and take a rest. You can check it out at https://leninm.itch.io/mbfbday btw... wait, is this advertising?

HO my gosh, that ending tho, it was quite the surprise but it was really well done. Gave me lots of ddlc vibes with how the game saves and what not. Just without the horror aspect. Good game man, well done!

Not really an important or major update:

  • Lessen the size of the .zip files from 60+ MB to 30+ MB
  • No game content has been changed
