Just made the page for our game public! I had a wonderful experience this time around in the jam, this is actually my second time doing a game for MFGJ (so technically "My Second Game Jam" XD) but the first time around last year I came in thinking I could do it all by myself and ended up with a game that reflects my skills, good art and animation, everything else all fucked up, boring and totally broken gameplay, stolen music etc.
This time around I had a different goal, I came in looking for a very small team with skills to add, I met Polo and Sara on the MFGJ discord and I instantly connected with them, honestly I'm a pretty antisocial person and I saw some pretty goofy people in the discord and I was worried I wouldn't mesh well with anyone but these two were totally my kind of people, we worked together to achieve the same goal and here it is Enter the Dollhouse!
I came up with the general idea of creepy dolls just by being a fan of shlocky horror movies like the entire franchise of Child's Play, Dolls, Puppet Master, Profondo Rosso, Terrifier etc. if it's gotta a creepy doll killing people I'm in, and if there's a killer clown even better! My ideas were just in this visual realm but I had no idea what to do gameplay wise and for that I have to give all the credit in the world to Polomeo, the whole collecting the dolls and avoid the clown makes for perfect tension without us having to resort to loud screamer jumpscares and any of that.
The sound is a whole other thing, Sara really got what we were going for and went far beyond what I was expecting of a sound designer, honestly I don't know anything about sound so I was just expecting some simple blippity bloppity music but she did so much for the whole atmosphere of the game, I'm in love with the ambient track, such a creepy droning sound and the other song (that you'll only get to hear if you beat the game if you need any motivation) is a perfect climax to the piece, not only that but she made little sound effects for each action like opening the drawer, the shower curtains, the clock, the brick etc so much cool stuff!
I livestreamed almost my whole process in the MFGJ discord server in pretty crazy late night hours so not a lot of people showed up but everyone who did (shout out to Andreu who spent a lot of time with me in these long nights) was super friendly and showed some of their own work as well, I really feel like this is a great community for people looking to work in games without the whole tension of getting paid or thinking about what would sell or not, something like this really helps to see the id of the creators and what they're really interested in, there are so many creative people from all over the world together it's awesome!
We only finished uploading a couple hours before the deadline not because we were late but because we gave this project our all and made it as polished as possible, I'm so happy with the finished project and I hope you give our creepy little game a shot!
