This is a really fun idea and concept. The setting is something which is easily imagined and populated. I share the same feeling as Danny Wall that it is missing some kind of obstacle/conflict examples or generators. I would love to know what ideas you have for them.
The O&O mechanic is fun and I like how friends can help each other out narratively with it.
I love the artwork of the blobby amoebas and their details. I think it would be helpful for a reader if the middle portions of the text (How to play, Stats and Character Creation) were laid out from left to right because how they rely on each other for comprehension. I think a less weighty body font would help readability and the look. : )
I am interested to see what you would create next!
thanks for your response! I agree with w/ you and Danny when it comes to obstacles / conflicts, and I’m currently drafting another page that will have this, along with some NPC teacher archetypes! I think it’s a swell idea and I appreciate y’all pointing it out, because I think it’ll make the game that much better!
That said, I’m glad you enjoyed the game, and hopefully whenever I’m able to complete 1.2 you’ll come back to check out the update :)
Really cool system, really like the O&O mechanic. Just wondering, do you recommend a DM / Keeper? The instructions say "grab a friend", so it is intended to be a 2 player game without a central storyteller?
My intention was for Amoebuds to play either as a solo game and / or a collaborative story game with friends. If you do play with a friend, I would recommend there to be a keeper role (even if multiple people share it) just so that there can be NPC characters as part of the story. That said, if you find a way to have fun with Amoebuds outside of my intention, then by golly do it!!!! :D
So much to like here. The level of creativity is so good. The setting is fun. I love a stat called "Flow." The only thing missing might be some enemies/obstacle springboards. Not too many d4-based systems out there :)
