  • I found the game running very smoothly. The art style was great. The combat system was nice, however I got stuck at a part where enemies one-shotted me. The music and sound effects fit the game really well. I wish the alchemy theme played a more active role in the game. Looking at the GDD there are very interesting concepts. Awesome job on the game! I look forward to seeing what you create for the next Jam!

The monster threat was growing. They did not want to listen...
In desperation, you sacrificed everything to summon the forbidden art of Shadow Alchemy.
....But it went wrong. There is always a cost...

You now roam between the shadow realm and the real world. No longer human and with no memory of your past and who you are.
Chased by a monster guarding the shadows and the power that resides there...
Single-minded, you know your goal is to take out the Alchemists.
They made you this way. They need to pay.

With your newfound powers over the Shadow realm, you have become the Shadow Spawn.

The pixel art is awesome and very ambitious, it gets kinda noisy sometimes especially in the cave areas but still great mood and style.

Having the almost forced death to teach you how to jump was really funny in my opinion.

The creepy reversed audio and whispers and the ambient tones really set a dark mood.

The movement felt okay, I especially liked the wall jumping, it felt almost exactly like Super Metroid!

I really didn't vibe with the combat though. As soon as I got outside the level 2 dude kicked my *** and I abused going back to the save point to heal to kill him, once I leveled up and killed the other dude I thought I would be okay but then dying takes away levels which sucks.

After the first bridge section I just skipped and ignored every enemy because they were super high level and It just didn't' feel worth it to level up only to lose them when you die.

I managed to get to the 2nd indoor cave area, the giant shadow beast chasing you in the darkness is awesome and I especially loved the section where you have to wall jump to get away from it.

Unfortunately there's an unskippable level 24 dude after that climb and I had no way of fighting him so I had to give up then.

Overall a really solid and fun foundation for a game, I'd love to play it more once the combat is fleshed out a bit or I'm not punished so much for dying.
