  • I find that the overall style of this game is not only blending well together on all fronts, but even with what feels like a simplistic story, the theme was implemented in a clever way that showcases bartending in a unique manner. I enjoyed that I could choose to or not to listen to the music (definitely kept that on); the art style caught my attention first before checking out the game; I'm personally a tad slow on the uptake of controls for a new game, but once I got the hang of it, they were easy to follow and fun when completing the task of taking care of any and all patrons that entered the bar. Would love to see more of this, great stuff!

Tell us about your game!
Blood X Thirsty is a bartending roguelike themed around halloween-esque monsters. The central mechanics revolve around adding ingredients to your brew which give different effects to different monster types. While you're tending bar, customers will enter and wait for a drink... until they get angry and attack! Try to get through as many nights as possible while buying ingredients using your tips from the previous night!

The gameplay loop is very simple and easy to pick up:
1. Add ingredients to your brew (point and click)
- Hover over ingredient names to see their effects. DoT = Drunkenness over Time, increasing this makes customers finish their drinks faster.
2. Serve customers at the bar:
- Move with WASD
- Pick up drinks from cauldron with UP
- Place drinks at bar with DOWN
- Attack in either direction with LEFT and RIGHT
3. Select a Shadow Perk (point and click)

Extra Notes
The game also has fully integrated gamepad support.

There is a surprise if you can make it to level 12!

We would have liked to add more ingredients and made a few balancing changes, but this prototype reflects the spirit of Blood X Thirsty.

Also this seems to be a common question: the ingredient effects can be seen by hovering over the name of the ingredient with the mouse cursor. DoT = drunkenness over time, customers finish their drinks faster.

Spent multiple days trying to get to level 12 and failed. But boy did I have fun doing it. Well put together game! Very fun and easy to pick up mechanics, the music loop and sound effects are pleasant and well balanced.  I don't know how you plan to expand this out, but I look forward to seeing where it goes!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! If you want to see how this plays out, feel free to join the Blood X Thirsty Discord Server: https://discord.gg/vHvSQ8ea. We'd love to continue working on this, and we'll know that there's a demand for it if we can get a few people in there. We also really want to focus on building off of community feedback, so your thoughts would be well appreciated!

Either way, I'm so glad you enjoyed our game :)

Okay this game is one of the best submissions based on gameplay. Its so addicting and theres so much stuff you can do differently between playthroughs, it simply beckons you to play another round, play another round. It was quite a delightfully devious move to have a leaderboard with the minimum requirement of 12 nights, becuase that kept me coming back even more haha (Unfortunately the farthest I got is 9).

The only feedback I have is that there should be a way to see the effects of the ingredients when using a controller. For my first 3 runs I had no idea what any of them did l basically just picked them at random.

But alas, the music is a jam and the artstyle is pretty cute. This is a great game already so im excited to see what its going to look like when its not just a prototype :>

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I'm so glad you had fun!

Adding accessibility features, especially full gamepad support is very important to us, so we're always looking for ways to improve that experience. In our most recent update, we added a list of ingredients that you can access from the "How To Play" menu.

Because of the super positive response we've gotten for this over the course of the jam, we're seriously considering seeing this through to a full release! If you want to share some of your thoughts on the game and get updates on changes and progress, we'd love for you to join the Official Blood X Thirsty Discord: https://discord.gg/vHvSQ8ea

Either way, thanks for playing!

Fun game! I played for a few minute this morning.
Cute detailed gfx & fitting music. The controls are very easy to learn.
I definitely see myself going back to play more tonight.
Good work!

Very engaging game loop, I couldn't stop trying. I like that the multiplier of effects are strong enough that choosing different combinations affect the gameplay in different ways. I liked that it does matter if you leave drinks in the bar, because at first I was just placing drinks in every empty seat, but with time I learned that it's better to be actively following where the characters are seating.

The controls are confortable and I felt agile serving drinks and getting them from the cauldron (I played with keyboard). The accuracy needed to place the drink in the seat I want is on point, almost feels like the game reads my mind when placing the drink, the distance and direction when it changes which seat will be served is very confortable, and only once I served a drink in a place where I didn't want to (and I could clearly notice it was my fault)

The challenge and learning curve feel very natural. I couldn't complete it in the first playthrough, but with each subsequent one I could see how I was getting closer to beating it (so far I'm stuck at night 10). I'm trying to see if I got what it takes to beat night 12, but wrote this now in case I don't.

Something I think could be improved is the combat feedback, when hitting patrons, the punch would feel better, in my opinion, if enemies were staggered or pushed when I hit them, and the same when they hit me, but other than that, it has a good feel. I genuinely feel worried every time I have to get to a seat, and there is an angry werewolf blocking my way.

My favorite part about this was the pixelart with the theme, the creatures are cute, and the whole scene really helped to immerse myself in the role of the bartender. The music is catchy and sells very well that I'm working at a nightclub.

I really like this game! Congratulations for this great work!

Developer

Thanks for all of the awesome feedback! I'm glad you're enjoying the game!

If you're interested in seeing a complete version of this, feel free to check out the Blood X Thirsty Discord! We had just planned on letting this be a jam game, but after the super positive response, we're talking about finishing the game, and what that might look like. Getting some folks in the Discord would show us that there's support for the game,  and getting some feedback there could show us what we should focus on for the full version.

Either way, thanks so much for playing, and for the kind words!

Wow, that was so much fun!! I really liked the serving drinks mechanic and making sure customers didn't get angry haha. I got to night 9 and might try again later.

I didn't realize the DoT meant that customers leave faster. I thought it was Damage over Time when those particular customers got angry.

The pixel art was great and the sounds were perfect too. The music was so good and kept me going through the level. Manic but chill at the same time.

I really like the upgrades. Kind of hard to tell how much it improved me by but I really liked the variety. I picked speed mostly.

I really like the control scheme! I was a bit confused because I was using a mouse at first but then read the instructions so I understood it right away. I also wasn't sure what ingredients to use so I just bought an assortment. The effects on the right was kind of confusing too but I figured it meant some effects carried over.

Overall, this was a very fun game. I never got bored and started getting nervous when there wasn't enough seats. Something like an upgrade for more drinks at a time or the ability to kick out cheaper customers (like the zombies) might be really cool to see.

Thank you so much for making this, it was a ton of fun! Super well done!

Fell in the same trap for our project, but would really would benefit from a tutorial.  Game itself is well polished once you figure out how it works, fun tavern sim with a twist.   Might want to explain things like DoT in a tutorial, for some reason I got it in my head that DoT made customers take longer to order/attack you.  Made it to night 7 on my second play-through.  Helped a lot when i figured out i could lay down drinks in advance.  Great job!

Developer

A tutorial is definitely something we wanted to include before clicking submit, but of course, we just didn't have time.

That's definitely something that the full version of this game would benefit from though. We're thinking about seeing this through to a full release, and so we started a Blood X Thirsty Discord Server for people to show support and share their ideas! Would love to hear from you about what a final version of this could look like.

Thanks for playing!

Insanely fun and creative game! The graphic is great, the controls feel natural, the gameplay is very addictive too! It's fun to see monsters being used as a customers being serve cocktails. This just feels hilarious! The game also gets more and more difficult as time goes on, and I unfortunately died at day 10. Oh well.

The only nitpick for me was that the tutorial is a bit lacking, where I didn't really know what to do at first. Also it feels like the ingredients are a bit unbalanced, where seems like there is not much reason to add ingredients other than the first two. (This is quite minor though)

Overall the game is very well made and polish, and it feels very good to play. Well done!

Developer

Adding a tutorial is definitely something we would have loved to do for the jam, but just didn't have time for. I think a full version of this game would really benefit from this!

We've started a Blood X Thirsty Discord for people to share their ideas and show support for a full release, so if you're interested in seeing what that might look like, feel free to check it out!

This was a fun little game. I like the bonus for a clean bar, it adds some extra reward to being strategic with the drinks instead of placing them in an open space immediately. Music was pretty catching and fitting for the visuals and vibe of the game too. The game definitely starts out pretty easy but gets a lot harder quite fast, I managed to make it to day 10 haha. I think it would be interesting to have a mechanic where you could boot out a customer, where you free up space on the bar, at the cost of losing the tip (or maybe a slight health penalty too). I enjoyed it!

Developer

That's an interesting mechanic I hadn't considered, you've got my gears turning for how to fit that in thematically...

We're considering finishing this for a full release, so if you're interested in showing support or sharing some ideas, feel free to check out our new Blood X Thirsty Discord Server!

I think this game is good overall, I liked the art, music and sound effects. I liked how you could deal with the customers who waited to long by attacking them.

Submitted(+1)

I thought I left some feedback when I played yesterday. Well, I leaving one now. This was really enjoyable. I don't even know if I have anything to critique. The art is nice, the music is nice (maybe a bit too intense, if I want to be nitpicky). The game starts off pretty chill as it should but then it steadily introduces complications and it's getting pretty challenging. The progression feels nice.

Developer

Thanks for revisiting to leave your feedback, we really appreciate it!

We're thinking about finishing BxT for a full release, so we've started a Blood X Thirsty Discord Server for people to share their ideas and show support for the project. Feel free to check it out if you're interested!

Thanks again for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Didn't ever play this genre, have to say that was pretty fun, around night 5 I felt like that's too easy and repetitive and I almost quit, but decided to try few more nights, and then I got my ass handed to me by night 10 xD.

I think this game can be really addictive if polished and taken to a good direction, I loved the art and the monster theme, few minor things that bothered me:

1. I feel like there isn't enough indication to the user that a drink was served, there is a "sliding cup" sound but it very faint and when you place two drinks really quick the sound is played once, so I think there should be a more noticeable sfx maybe so lines for the monsters like "its about time" or something like that, and a better visual indication then the progress bar changing color and resetting

2. the progress bars color blend too well with the red color of the bar and its quite easy to miss or think you have red bars when you don't have them, maybe an outline to the bars?

3.  I wish I had another way to survive then rely only on choosing the attack damage or the health damage upgrade, meaning I  wish there was a place to use my skills as a player somehow

overall very polished, fun and addictive, a lot of potential definitely a top contender :)

Developer

I'm curious as to what genre you would call this exactly, as even we're not too sure lol.

These are all very good suggestions, thanks for leaving this feedback! We've already updated the look of the progress bars, and we're talking about what we can do with the sfx.

We're thinking about finishing this game up for a full release, so if you're interested in checking that out, showing support, or sharing some ideas, come hang out with us in the Blood X Thirsty Discord!

Thanks for playing!

Ohh, I had a lot of fun with this one! Played it for quite a while, only made it to night 11 though (props to Faulko for the highscore, you absolute mad man 😳). I love how the time it takes running along the bar becomes a resource you have to manage. Super cool pixel art, love all the little details you put in, and great music & sound design, too!

I realized way too far into the game that there is a bonus for a clean bar. Changed my playstyle a bit for sure, at least towards the end of every night. Maybe mention that in the How To Play? Or is it something you want the player to discover?

Overall really fun and polished feeling game, good job! 👏

Developer(+1)

Thanks I'm glad you had fun and well done making it to night 11!

The bonus is intended to be a secret. There's also another secret on night 12 which is why we have a leaderboard for anyone can get passed that night... hehehehehehe.

Well... I can see the game, I can feel it would be funny to play. But I didn't understood hot to give the zombies the brew. I wasn't able to put them in front of the awating ones, only on the empty spaces. I could not play on the keyboard since I use a 70% sized one, where the arrow keys are on the same sopt as WASD but with one exrta input. On the controller when I pressed to go to the side It kept randomly atacking so I could barely move. I wish I could play this one, since it looks fun and easy to get without much complicated brewing system or objective. A game that looks like a game, and I love that. If you have an updated version or plan on releasing it on steam please send me the link. Ill ask the other team members to play as well to see if the bugs I encountered are because of my hardware. But overall good design and theme interpretation.

Developer

Sorry you ran into those issues! You can rebind the controls in the settings menu and there's an explanation of the game and the buttons on this menu and on the game page.

What in the world :D

Initially I was a bit confused by seemingly not being able to pick up/place drinks on the counter on the first night - perhaps it was a bug? So I fended off all the offenders with my scratchy-scratchy claws (?) and kept on brewing... Then the second night - a-ha, drinks, now I can satiate my customers! Marvelous. Not bad, good, okay, I think I got this.... Alright, vampires are a bit of a problem, but I can deal with that... Mummies?.. Oh lord, these parchment-wrapped monstrosities are PARCHED! OH LORD OH PLEASE NO STOP CLIMBING OVER EACH OTHER I GOT DRINKS RIGHT HERE BUT I ONLY HAVE TWO HANDS!

Got all the way past Night 8 and then I sort of had my fill. The game is very well executed, it taps into the spirit of Undercooked with sublime finesse without requiring you to have a spouse, or friends... Solid. Expand/rework the brewing system, add different stages, maybe local co-op (which, with controller support, should enable over-internet co-op via Steam facilities?) - and honestly, ship it. It's worth it.

Developer

Thanks so much for the awesome feedback! I'm glad you had so much fun playing :)

It means so much that you think this is even close to shippable! We've been talking about finishing the game and what a complete version would look like, so we started a Blood X Thirsty Discord so we can get suggestions from the players directly. We're hoping that by getting a few people in here to show some support and share some ideas, we can deliver an awesome game!

Anyway, thanks for playing!

I had quite a lot of fun playing this game, I love the music and art! And no bugs to report!

A few suggestions for improvement:

- I think the shop page's "current brew" panel could be improved to show the DoT multiplier for specific monsters as well as the money gain from them. At the moment I have to hover over the ingredient to look at the effect and do all the math in my head for the effects on each monster.

- Perhaps this was intentional design to make the levels more difficult but the waiting monsters don't immediately go to a seat that opens up. There were times where I had a few seats open up but the monster simply decided not to go sit for a few seconds and got angry instead :(

Overall very solid fun game!

Developer

First off, thanks for playing the game!

Improving the shop UI to make it easier to understand is something that we iterated over a few times, and it's definitely an area the game could still be improved further.

We're thinking about rolling this into a full release, so if you'd be interested in sharing your ideas or just checking out what we're working on, feel free to come hang out with us in the Blood X Thirsty Discord!

Thanks for the great feedback!

Great idea for a game! this obviously had a TON of work put into it. I died on the first night on my first attempt :skull. Game has great visuals and sound and really ramps up in chaoticness quickly! I did find the controls really hard to get my head around at first, i think its because I always think of the arrow keys as directional, but the controls are changeable so it wasn't much of a big deal!

Keep up the fantastic work!

Developer

First off, thanks for playing!

The control scheme is something we changed up a few times, but we eventually settled on this Binding-of-Isaac-inspired twin stick feel. This is something we're considering changing for a full release.

If you're interested in seeing a full version, or sharing some ideas on how the game could be improved, feel free to come chat with us at the Blood X Thirsty Discord!
