  • the game is really pretty, but I would have liked to have a tutorial to explain the goal and mechanics. at one point I just kept getting thrown back to the start of the game without really understanding why.

The player controls a mystical light-based orb which needs light to survive. Spending time in the darkness causes the orb’s inner-light to diminish, and if it goes out entirely, the orb resets to the start of the level. A powerup is available to augment the lights properties, making it brighter to survive longer.

Need More Light uses light and darkness as a metaphor for the ups and downs of mental health. While the shadows represent our darker feelings of sadness and despair, light brings happiness and hope.

The control scheme is a simple A/D for left right movement, SPACE for Jump, K for Dash and P for pause menu. There is no mouse input required.

The use of jump and dash in combination is required to complete some obstacles in level 2.

Extra Notes
Thankyou for hosting this Game Jam, we really enjoyed being a part of our first one, having started our game development journey together in early 2024. We look forward to competing in future Jams, and to making many games in the years to come.

Firstly the game is beautiful and the design is fantastic. The ambient music/sounds are really good too.

But maaan I hate the controls. It's like everything has a delay or it's just really slow to move/stop and feels super floaty and not very responsive especially once you're already in the air.

I really wanted to play it for longer because it's so cool but dying cos I can't do simple platforming jumps that you'd find in 1-1 in Super Mario because of the controls just annoyed me too much.

If that's your intended design/difficulty with the game then fair enough but it's not for me.
