  • The game is nice and simple to understand, with clear indicators of progress. The art style was well defined, making sprites easy to see against the beautiful tileset and drawing the player’s eyes to the important information. The music was light and bouncy, reminiscent of Bomberman or Mega man, though it does not cycle if it finishes before the level is over. The Game Design Document was a bit of a mess, making it difficult to find things, sometimes. Things missing from the GDD include the timeline for the project and the control style for the game more detailed than grid-based movement. I did see that certain things were cut due to time constraints, so there seems to have been a timeline somewhere, but that should be in your GDD as well. I can’t wait to see what you all do next, as I thought it was an amazing family activity and something that you all should be extremely proud of!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Puzzle game, think like bomberman but destroying turrets and debris to clear levels. You are a robot that has been repurposed to clear the way for humanity to get to safety. Its turn based so you need to plan out your movements to not get hit by your own bombs or enemy lasers.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You are a repurposed weapon of destruction that is now being turned into a way to save humanity from itself and the endless war.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
I am super proud of my daughters work on the art in this game, she was a champ and didn't scoff at any of my requests to make changes to tiles or the turrets during this project!

This was an interesting concept and the music reminded me of SEGA games. I wasn't a fan of the "turn based" movement but I have to admit that it was an interesting decision and overall added some puzzle elements to the game which is a nice twist. Your daughter did awesome work on the art :) From visual aspect the game felt like a single consistent unit and accompanied with retro music felt nice.
There are a few comments I would like to point out for possible improvements:
1. Your buttons blend in with the background/game on the main menu. Would be better if the background was less visible so the button would hold more attention (call to action).
2. Scaling was a bit of an issue. You can look more into it by setting correct Stretch mode & Stretch aspect IIRC. This is not a major issue but would make your game look better.
3. Don't be shy of using custom fonts. Minimal effort but correct font can greatly improve presentation of your game. This is mostly for UI elements & instruction popups.

Hope these will be helpful and you had fun working with your daughter :)

Thank you for the input it is much appreciated!  Scaling was definitely something that I should have spent more time on.  Thank you for the idea about the buttons I had not thought about that!

I love Bomberman and I immediately picked up on the influences, which was great. This was a lot of fun and I played it all the way through! It took a minute to pick up on the turn based gameplay compared to classic Bomberman, but it was unique style and I enjoyed trying to plan things out. Art style was great and consistent throughout as well!
