  • Easy to learn, hard to master. The essence of the arcade era shines through in this game, as asteroids and breakout meet. The controls are easy to understand and are smooth as they can be. The “Shield Hero” twist on theme was also wonderfully creative. The only problems I had with the game were that the music loop got old rather quickly, possibly because of the higher octave that the music was in without any bass to balance it out, and that the randomness often rewarded luck rather than skill. Moving to the Game Design Document, the design is well laid out and detailed except for 2 areas, having imaging in your GDD demonstrating the prototype design or mechanics involved and not having future planning for after submission. Even if it is something small, like adding modifiers to the game that can impact the score, or a level system like both games used for inspiration. All in all, great work!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Your planet is under attack from asteroids and UFOs alike. You are a barrier, acting as a shield to deflect all incoming obstacles. Use the left and right arrow keys to skillfully defend your planet and earn points when obstacles collide.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
The player controls a barrier as both a defensive and offensive weapon.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
This is my first published game and while I know a lot of things are barebones and could use some polish, I'm happy I was able to make something resembling a complete game in the amount of time I had.

Cool game, and really well done and impressive for a first! Polish, as you mentioned, can always be applied too help any game, but as this is your first published game, I'll focus more on the core:

- I think the game at its core is really difficult. I'd recommend starting off slow, with few enemies, and prgressively ramping up the amount of enemies.

- The controls are a bit finicky. I think slowing down the paddle movement (and compensating with slower enemy movement), as well as positioning the paddle a bit further away from the planet could help.

Good stuff!
