Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • Playability - The cursor doesn't follow my computer's mouse's dpi, which causes issues when not playing fullscreen. If this is because you are rendering the cursor via math, I recommend just changing the cursor's texture via Cursor.SetCursor([texture], etc. etc.). https://youtu.be/8Fm37H1Mwxw - Part of the difficulty of this game is that you move in the direction you are aiming, thus making the red homing enemies the most dangerous by far. Not too sure how I feel about it. - Dead enemies can drift offscreen, thus not allowing you to pick them up which is a bit frustrating since they come back to play after a bit and also your army is annihilated when touching the walls. Theme Implementation - Throwing part of yourself certainly makes you the weapon! I elaborate a bit more in the cleverness section though. Cleverness - After encountering the 3 enemy types, there isn't much more to do especially since each take 2 damage to kill. Thanks to the spawn indicator (which is a good feature) its not too hard to just time their entry and send 2 shots early. - I understand you used Bricker Breaks Free and Fisheye as your inspiration but unfortunately you don't innovate much further than that. I think if you addressed the previous point by introducing difficulty scaling, more enemies, powerups, obstacles/level changes, this game would be much more successful! Artistic Style - Love the retro look and attention to detail in your animations and UI. Great sound design. Due to the lacking in the cleverness department I won't be selecting this in the Judges' Choice, however overall this is a polished game that was fun to play and I applaud you for creating it in 2 weeks! Thank you for participating.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
You play as an interconnected hive with the goal of killing enemies. However, to kill an enemy you must sacrifice members of the hive (with chance for gaining more).

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You - the hive - are the weapon, and the cells are the ammunition.

This is a very enjoyable and fun little game and I like it a lot! The game do starts a bit slowly but it started to get better and better once you goes on a few tries and started to grasp what the game is about. I eventually got score of 2550 which I guess is not too good. The visuals in the game although simple somehow looks very pleasant, especially the special effects which I think contributes the most to the nice feel of the game.

For some feedback, I think the game do feels a bit slow concerning the difficult increase. Dragging on more than 10 mins I think do not benefit the game at all, and I rather prefer that fast to lose and start again mentality. I would also say that the game would benefit with more enemy types, and I would also suggest adding rare enemies that seldom appears, but would be much harder to deal with.

Anyway, I think you did a good job polishing the game and really make something very good in that short 14 days time limit. Well done!

Thanks for your kind words and great feedback!

This game is great, I've played it for over an hour now. It's a perfect interpretation of the theme. Love the visual style and general level of polish. Especially excellent use of the post-processing effects

Some minor notes/thoughts:

  • when you get to 10000 points, the scoreboard rolls over to 00001 points, and then you start gaining points as normal again (*see image)
  • the difficulty probably ramps up too slowly, on a 30 minute run I rarely had more than one enemy on screen
  • enemies (and their stunned bodies) probably shouldn't be able to exit the screen, it's frustrating to stun a guy only to have it float away and then do an attack from offscreen
  • the laser enemies are effectively not a threat compared to the other two, because the biggest danger to the player is having an enemy near them

All-in-all one of my favourite entries. I could see myself coming back and playing it again and again. Thanks for making it :)

Thank you so much! I can not think of a greater honor than someone playing my jam game for over an hour (and I frankly doubted someone would ever reach 10000+ score). Great feedback definitely worth implementing <3

Really great retro feel! Enjoyed the trip :) The system and gameplay feels food, maybe just needs some tuning on the difficulty ramping. Perhaps a bit more enemies on  the screen at once to get those dangerous situations and chance for amazing recoveries ;)

Thanks for the kind words and valid input!

I really enjoyed your game! I killed myself in the first trys xD But after some time, i got the hang of it. The simple art style works really good for this game :D keep it up!

Felt like it played into the theme in a great way. The lowfi style also makes it stand out wellpolished. And hey - I made it on the highscore :D

Music got a little tedious though

Thanks!

Took me a while to understand that the Dash enemy could also be shot. Once I understood that, I can see why people say the game is easy. I think it's still pretty satisfying as is! Good game!

Thanks!

Really well done, polished visuals, fun to control. Only problem for me was that once I got the hang of it I was just pre-firing where the enemies would come from and killing them instantly. The enemies only ever spawn in one at a time. This would be fixed if 2 enemies spawned at same time because I couldn't pre-fire both.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Spawning multiple enemies at a time is a great suggestion and would provide a deeper dynamic, as you mentioned.

really cool interpretation of the theme. I like the minimalist style too :)

Really simple but addicting game. Idk. Monkey brain was like let's just keep playing. Haha! Could see it getting crazier with more enemies on screen. I think at time of build it's pretty easy. But I liked the variety and how each enemy has their own thing they're doing. I also really like the Hive being your weapon essentially. Gotta make sure to land your shots or you'll beat yourself.

Fine job.

Love the visual style of this, it comes across incredibly well polished. You managed exactly what I wanted and failed with my submission.

You really nailed the theme too!

Over all this feels like a real strong submission!

Developer

Thanks <3

Cool game, really like the leaderboard as well. Done that before as well and it's a really nice thing to add for the player.

The controls to shoot and move at the same time are a bit finnicky, but I like it for it. It's quite an original way to do it, and it makes you need to do a lot of planning, which is good.

Thanks for the kind words!

I had alot of fun moving my little fellas around and learning the different enemy type’s movement and behavior. Amazing work! c:

Had a great time, one of the best so far. A solid foundation for an incremental game like Node Buster

A good arcade game and gameplay loop. Did not get that high because the mouse issue caused some enemies to be unobtainable until they moved in.

Thanks!

Very fun! Reminds me of old arcade cabinet games, what more could you ask for? Thought I had it down then got clapped. Forget my score, was like 1590 or something

Only feedback is that like others have said, should maybe ramp up a little faster. Also I found the cell regeneration/spawn noise to be a little rough to listen to, compared to the shoot/hit sounds. I think its just a little too high-pitched, but I'm also a little sensitive to sound lol

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, I do agree on the spawn noise being too high-pitched.

Nice simple art style, good sound effects and music to match the theme. Simple but good gameplay. Good job!

Thank you!

Nice little submission. I got 3300 points!

Simple art style is very well executed. Fits the theme. Very good use of attack forecasting with the sound and animations.

Well done for getting a leaderboard working too. I have one in my submission, and I know how much of a pain they can sometimes be.

For improvements, maybe add a hard mode the player can select.

Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks and nice score! A hard mode is definitely to be considered.

Really cool. Love the visual aesthetic! Only bit of feedback would be to ramp up the difficulty a bit sooner or at a more steady pace! I got 1520 points! :D

Developer

Thanks! I wish I had more time to balance, but I had to make the decision to go for slower ramping such that the game would be more accessible. Though I totally see what you mean. Nice score!
