Games submitted have to meet these requirements as well as the rules:

  • Game Resolution can be a maximum of 640 x 480
  • Texture Resolution: Can be a small as you want, but can be a MAX of 256 x 256
  • Models should be Low-Poly, but don't have to be.
  • All games are recommended to be playable in the browser, but are not required to be if necessary.
  • Games cannot contain any NSFW content or swears and cusses AT ALL.
  • All games should be 3D but aren't required to be.
  • Only 256 unique colors can be shown on the screen at one time.
  • DO NOT WORK ON ANYTHING FOR THE JAM UNTIL THE JAM STARTS

Is there a new link to the discord? I wasn't able to access it via the link in the jam description. Thanks!

Heya. I have a few questions. Do we have to keep a certain amount of pixels per certain unit (e.g. a 256x256 texture per square meter)? Is tiling of textures on certain surfaces allowed? And if so, then does stretching and squeezing a tiled 256x256 texture on a given surface count even if squeezing it on a surface would make it look out of place among the PS1-style graphics? And what if someone uses separate textures and patches them up together onto one model to make it more detailed? Is any sort of texture filtering allowed (are textures allowed to look blurry)? Do the textures need to follow certain color limitations?

Or do I just shut up and keep every texture file in a size of 256x256 pixels as you said?

I'm sorry for the many questions and the confusing words I might be throwing around here, but with something as vague as "texture resolutions can be a maximum of 256x256" it might be easy to mess up and make a game that technically has a size of 256x256 pixels per texture file but just looks too detailed or out of place for the PS1-style graphics.

Texture tiling is fine as it's common in most PS1 game, I'm ok you using multiple textures, as long as each one is 256px or below, since the PS1's limit to textures is 256px. A long of PS1 games have it to where even though the texture are only 256 x 256, it has a ton of detail. Any kind of texture filtering is allowed and there are no color pallette limitations aside from the fact that PS1's can only render 256 unique colors on the screen at one time, and don't worry about graphic looking out of place since the maximum game resolution is also 256px by 256px so in the end none of the textures will really be too detailed. Hope this answers your questions 🙂

I'm sorry for being a burden to answer questions for, but I noticed that although the rules say that a specific resolution of 256x240 pixels is required, the PS1 was still capable of higher resolutions than 256x240 (ranging from 256x224 to 640x480, at least according to Wikipedia). Is this intentional?

I did not know that! I'll update the rules, thank you!

Hello! This must be a pretty newbie question, but the resolution limitation of 640 x 480 pixels applies to the scale / resolution of the game, or the window size? For instance, I’ve set my game to be this resolution inside the engine and enabled rescaling, which would keep the 4:3 aspect ratio and the textures look the exact same, but the internal resolution is still unchanged. Is this allowed, or does the windows size also have to match this resolution?

Thank you for the answer!

Host

Window size has no limit, the aspect ratio and resolution must stay the same, hope this helps ;

As long as the game is free to play, yes

Hello, this is first jam I'm taking part in and I am excited for it, writing this because I have a question regarding your last point, not working on anything jam related before it starts, I've made psx style games before so I have lots of models and textures that fits the style (all of them mine), am I allowed to use those textures? Also is it a problem if it's a horror game, more of a creepy-ish psychological atmospheric experience than a horror, won't be bloody gore, jumpscare filled game but with certain elements of scary, thank you for your time

Just nothing TOO violent, and I don't care if its horror just still try to follow the theme
