How restricted are the the consoles restrictions?

Basically I have a game in mind but I want to do it in 16 bits, so I want to choose a 16 bit console, but I don't know if the game fit it's controller. So I wanted to know if I can use modern controllers on an old video game or if I will need to adapt it.

Hiya! Just to clear some stuff up a bit, it is only the game that has to have the feel of an old retro console. It doesn't actually have to be supported by one. The idea was to have the aesthetic of one, so yes you can use any controller/keyboard etc. The only thing that have to be distinctly retro is the look or feel of the game. Hope this helps!

Tysm for the help

Mind if I jump on this thread and ask a similar question? Is it ok to work on an already retro game and build it for an older retro console. So for example a Megadrive game designed for Atari 2600 say?

yep that would be completely fine. Good luck everyone!

Thanks for confirming
