Is it necessary to have a separate high score list, or is it sufficent to just show the high score somewhere ingame, maybe in the upper left corner?

Also, does the high score need to be persisted between play sessions, that is after a restart of the game?

Its safe to assume it needs to be saved across all play sessions and in the corner should be fine
