PUBLISHING PICO-8 TO ITCH.IO Sticky

Here's how to make your Pico-8 game playable on itch.io!

  • Export from pico: EXPORT FILENAME.HTML
  • It makes FILENAME.HTML and FILENAME.JS
  • Rename  FILENAME.HTML to INDEX.HTML (cuz that is what itch.io wants) then ZIP those two files.
  • Now, in itch.io upload, choose HTML instead of Executable and upload the zip
  • Choose 750x640 display size (Thanks, KittenM4aster!)
  • After you upload, you can change the theme of the page to match your game, like this: https://thattomhall.itch.io/myrrhs-edge

Those are the tricky bits -- fill in the rest and you are good to go!

I did it but the sound cracks and the graphics are blurry.

No idea about the sound?  But make sure it is 640 x 640 or 512x512 --- has to be a multiple of 128!

FYI I actually use 750 x 640 (which is the size recommended in the PICO-8 manual) on all my PICO-8 games on itch and it works great. I think the extra width is so that you can see the clickable buttons on the side (although the layout for those is unfortunately broken in Chrome in the latest version)

I've actually noticed some of the submissions have some scaling/rounding issues where not all pixels are displayed as squares...I'm not sure what dimensions those ones are using but they are apparently not good dimensions to use :p

Hmmm thanks for the info!

Hello.

Whenever I click on the start button, the game won't load. Am I doing something wrong?

Host

Which game? Did you make a Pico-8 game that runs in Pico-8 and then follow all those steps?

Also... This is a game jam that finished January 1st. Maybe try looking at www.lexaloffle.com in the manual?

My bad, I just followed the directions poorly

Host

k!

Hello I would like to know, are we able to export already existing games like meas castle, frozen helm, sorcerers trial (etc) from the pico 8 into html and js format? If so can I have directions for Meas castle.

Host

If you can download a cart, then load it into Pico-8, and EXPORT CARTNAME.HTML.

Always link back to the original game's page and give credit (if they say it is okay to distribute!)

can you give me the steps to do it? Just to  be specific, I tried to install a demos folder by typing in install_demos

Host

I didn't make it but here's the EXPORT command on the wiki.

I have already made two games on pico8, but nothing happens at startup, help
