I just beat hard with the phone and battery debuff and got zero benefits....
You (are supposed to) get extra money from the level, not a secret bonus unlock afterwards if that's what you're referring to.
the "return" is basically the challenge item's cost, but multiplied by either 3x or 5x. i found out the hard way that it wasnt really a great money booster
