I know this is a slightly weird question, but I always like to see things how their creator imagined them when I can. So like... visually, should I be setting things up for "pure" colors, colors desaturated to imitate the GBC effect, an actual GBC screen (or emulation thereof), a GBA screen (or emulation thereof), or some other way? Like, I get this is fiddly and all, and also that "what looks good for me" is probably a general "right answer." But I always want to like... try to see things how the person who made it saw or imagines it?

That’s an interesting question!
When I started making the Yurivania series I wasn’t very familiar with the GB line of hardware so I didn’t really understand the implications of my color choices.
Instead, I thought of the values that the default web emulator GB Studio uses as the target palette. It attempts to desaturate the colors like a non-backlit GBC, but I don’t believe they do a terribly accurate job.
In general, anything slightly desaturated will work, but you can use the screen shots on this page as a guide!
