At some point, you realize, you must have nodded off, because you wake to a numb arm. Pins and needles shoot through you as you lift a heavy paw from your elbow.
“Awake, Pretty?” You turn to see bright blue eyes, wide awake and watching you. He kept you safe, as promised.
The scarred beastman remains on guard as you clean up, folding his well-worn blankets and tucking them into his pack. You’re surprised by the wave of melancholy that accompanies such an automatic, simple gesture. This fucking game, if you can even call it that.
“Okay. Good to go,” you say with a tired nod. “See you around, Rocky.”
An involuntary whine escapes the gnoll, and he turns to take your hand in his. He presses several warm coins into your hand, gives your head a final sniff, and turns to leave.
“Be safe, Pretty.”
“Yeah… you too.”
You watch as the gnoll lumbers down the passage and around a corner before he disappears from sight. Time to go, you suppose.
