hmm, I got the feeling you wanted to have some monster hidden in the "negative" space. maybe there is just missing a moving monster ? and you can actually know its place when you move down?
Basically the mission of the game is kill monster below for reaching ending of the hole (it's possible, it's just confusing). Beside him, there was no any more monsters in plans.
