I have run into the same issue. I can start the game in any mode, full-screen or windowed. I see a small point in the distance, and can approach it. After it zooms in enough that I can see stripes of light across the screen, it turns to black and my monitor stops receiving a signal from the graphics card. At that point I have to do a hard reboot on my computer.
