1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself?
Hi everyone! My name is Steve - I'm a Javascript developer/systems administrator who lives in New York. Although my job involves some software development, I haven't done much "creative" work with programming in a while.
2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?
I did not participate in the last jam - and I think the last time I tried to jam was ~7 years ago! During lockdown, I have been having a great time with the itch.io bundles, and now I am feeling extra inspired to make something creative.
3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?
I am a Playstation 2 era gamer who was obsessed with Morrowind (and the other TES games) and a lot of other classics from that era. Nowadays, I play a lot more tycoon/simulator games (Railroad Tycoon, Banished) and quirky indie games. I really love couch multiplayer games like Spelunky, Magicka, and Battleblock Theater.
I think my "dream game" to build is a controller-based Town Management game with local multiplayer. It would be fun to argue with other players about where you'd build the Town Hall and how to juggle challenges.
4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?
I work with Javascript and Python professionally, but I am going to use this jam as an opportunity to try Lua (possibly through the Love framework).
5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!
I love when a story element in a game appears procedurally/naturally, like the natural play stories that people tell from Dwarf Fortress.
6. What are your goals for this game jam?
Design a playable interface using ASCII/Lua
Build something that uses a turn-based RPG combat system for a non-combat activity (cooking, crafting, persuasion, etc.)
