Pretty cool idea. Context for any extra arrows that go through enemy lines being a bad thing is kinda weird. Maybe those arrows, instead of damaging the player directly, could be subtracted from the arrows fired on the next volley. That way it'd still be a punishment for the player, throwing off the next number.
